Yuanyang is in southern Yunnan Province about 400 km to the south-west of the capital city of Kunming. It takes about 7 hours to drive from Kunming to Yuanyang. The best time to see the magnificent terraced rice fields is during February and March. This is the time when the villagers water the terraces in preparation for ploughing. The water in the fields reflects the sunshine to create many colors. In September, when the rice is ripe, the mountains turn a golden yellow color. Yuanyang is the hometown of the Hani nationality. They live in a mountainous area and have to cultivate on hills from generation to generation. The terraced fields are the crystal of the Hani people’s wisdom, which reflects a harmonious relationship between human beings and nature.
