Overview

Located in the northeast of Jiangxi Province, Wuyuan is east of the national historical city-Quzhou, west of the capital of porcelain -Jingdezhen, north of the national tourist attraction-Mount Huang, and south of the famous sacred mountain-Mount Sanqing. Thus it is a green pearl set in the boundary between Anhui, Zhejiang and Jiangxi provinces. It not only is a national famed cultural and ecological tourist county, but also has long been known as “the Hometown of Books”, “the Hometown of Tea”, and even “the most picturesque village of China”. There are now three separate tour routes recommended: in the east, in the west and the north.

Along the eastern route, what are most attractive are the well-protected ancient villages of the Ming (1368–1644) and Qing (1636–1911) Dynasties as well as the pastoral landscape. The ancient town of Jiangwan with a history of 1000 years is one of the main attractions. It is the hometown of China’s former president, Jiang Zemin. Jiangwan was first built in the late Sui Dynasty (581–618) and early Tang Dynasty (618–907) over 1000 years ago. In the year 1079 in the Northern Song Dynasty (920–1127), Jiang Di moved there with his families and gradually an extended family came into being. It is surrounded by mountains and rivers. With good natural and cultural environment, a number of talented personages were born and grew up there, bringing Wuyuan fame as the “the Hometown of Books”. As the first 4A-class scenic area (4A is the highest level in attraction rating in China), it possesses many ancient architecture of Hui-style (Hui is short for Anhui Province. Hui style building is characteristic for its white walls and grey tiles) including Sansheng Hall, Dunchong Hall, the archaic house of Ten Families. Other attractions in this area include Xiao Jiang Ancestral Hall, the Memorial Hall of Jiang Yong, Nanguan Pavilion, and Seven Star Well. All and a few more are high in historical and aesthetic value.

The Likeng tourist area is famous for the harmony of little bridge, flowing brook and its cottages. The village is embraced by mountains and enjoys splendid scenery. The Xiaoqi tourist area is reputed as the ecological residential area. Next to age-old trees are the houses of various heights; near and far mountains are dim in the setting sun; mist floats on the tips of the trees like a transparent ribbon; rivers flows out of the village in a circle as if the village is a girl wearing a bracelet. You can fully appreciate its elegant residential area, wristed lane, bluestone road and towering age-old trees. What’s more, Wuyuan has the Ancestral Hall of Yu Family in the Wangkou tourist area, a cultural relic unit under the state protection, covering an area of over 1000 square meters. It is renowned as “the art gallery” for its grand architecture, well-designed layout, superb craftsmanship, and unique characteristics.

The special features of the north route are its natural scenery. Dazhang Mountain and Wolong Valley scenic area enjoy the distinctive scenery of mountains and valleys. Forest covers more than 90% of the area. You can enjoy the Wulong Valley all the year round: in the spring, flowers bloom in the mountains; in the summer, it becomes a green world with a great amount of trees; in autumn, the mountains are ablaze with the red maples; in winter, ice is shaped as if it is carved by a skillful craftsman. Whenever you visit, it always waits to surprise you with its changing colors. Groups of waterfalls make your tour even more thrilling.

The west route is a good sample of an ecological environment. As a provincial natural protected area, Yuanyang Lake Tourist Area is the biggest habitat of wild mandarin duck which gives the area its name. The forests make it a green world, while the lakes are shining in sun with their crystal water. In the late autumn and early winter, over 2000 pairs of mandarin ducks will migrate from the north with their “kids”.

The Jinshan Ecological Tea Garden is the demonstration site for national ecological agriculture tourists. You can have the experiences of plucking tea, making tea and drinking tea, enchanting yourself with leisure in the sea of tea plants.

Best Time to Visit

The weather there is moderate and moist. It features four distinct seasons and has foggy periods in most of the days. You can enjoy yourself there in any season, while spring is the most pleasant time, especially in April. The mountains are decorated with red azaleas; the hills are covered by green tea plants and golden blooming rape flowers. When the colors of nature meet the white wall and black tile, a harmonious picture comes into being.

Note that from late-March to mid-May is the high season there. Hotel prices rise considerably, and the scenic spots are very crowded. Avoid visiting on Friday, Saturday and Sunday, and expect large crowds.
