Clothing: Winter clothing such as an overcoat and thick trousers are essential for staying warm. It feels cold at night because of the high humidity in the area of 80%. There is less indoor heating than most foreigners are used to, so you might need your to wear your coat even when you're inside restaurants and hotels.
Orange Island (橘子洲, Júzǐzhōu /jyoo-dzuh jo/): If the weather is pleasant, you can visit this popular park during the low travel season. You'll enjoy the gardens and the river when there are less crowds. It is known for its gardens, thousands of fruit trees, a large statue of Mao's head, and weekly firework displays. The orange trees bear their fruit in November, and you can pick and buy them.
The Yuelu Academy Park: Changsha's most popular park is on the campus of Hunan University. Yuelu Academy was one of the first four universities, and it was built in 976. The scenery on the hill is beautiful, and it is good exercise. A highlight of the park is a museum about education that teaches people about the historic academy, Hunan University, and China's modern educational system and goals.
Wulingyuan Scenic and Historic Interest Area: China's most scenic and most popular natural park is Hunan's most famous attraction. In November, there are autumn colors, and you can enjoy extensive hikes in cool weather with much less crowding. It rains less, and the fog and mists make the scenery look more like a Chinese painting.
