Getting a visa to go to China can be a bit of a hassle, but thankfully Hainan Island has 30-day visa-free access for 59 different nationalities.
This means that if you are looking for a tropical island to unwind, if you qualify, and if you don't plan on staying for more than 30 days, you do not need to apply for a Chinese visa to go to Hainan Province. If you're seeking to go to any other China province you will need a visa.
In order to apply for visa-free access to Hainan for 30 days, you have to have an eligible passport and enter Hainan at an eligible entry point.

You have to apply through an accredited China travel agency (such as China Highlights), as you cannot apply for the 30-day visa-free access yourself. Submit the information above to the travel agency at least 48 hours before arriving in Hainan, and the agency will apply for it on your behalf. The earlier you can arrange this, the better!

Asia: Korea, Japan, Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, Kazakhstan, the Philippines, Indonesia, Brunei, the United Arab Emirates and Qatar
Apart from the 30-day visa-free access, you can also get a visa on arrival in Hainan yourself. This is available to most nationalities (with the notable exception of the US and France), and costs RMB 168-956 depending on your nationality.
Make sure you've got enough money for the visa fee and a passport photo ready once you get to the airport in Hainan.
