Weather: July is the hottest month in the year and the second wettest. July has an average precipitation of 335 mm that falls on 16 days of the month.
The high peaks block off warm moist ocean air causing it to rise, cool, and produce the 'sea of clouds' and rain.
The temperature during the month is mild and is pleasant for hiking and touring, but expect frequent rain, clouds, and view obstructing fog. The high humidity of 91% makes you feel warmer on many days.
The average nightly low temperature is 16 °C (61 °F), and the average daily high temperature is 20 °C (68 °F). When it is sunny, the UV index is extreme. Stay abreast of the local weather forecast>>
Clothing: You'll need rain gear and waterproof shoes with good traction. Some days, you could wear shorts and T-shirts, but we suggest dressing in layers to adapt to changing conditions. Jeans are not advisable due to the rain. A sunhat can help protect your face if it is sunny.
Hiking: The mountain is a beautiful natural scenic area in the eastern coastal area to escape the summer heat. There are big crowds when the weather is fine. Fit hikers can hike up to the top of one of the three main peaks in three or four hours. The climb is moderately strenuous.
To avoid inclement weather or the strenuous stair climb, take one of the three different comfortable cable cars that go to the 1,400m+ (5,000 feet) scenic area near some hotels.
Hong Village is an old clan village that was listed as World Heritage in 2000. Usually described as one of the Yellow Mountains' must sees, it is known for Ming and Qing courtyard gardens and houses and its beautiful countryside. You can take a 30-minute walk between it and the giant trees of Tachuan Village.
Schools and universities let out for summer vacation in July, a flood of eager young hikers climb the peaks. The main paths may be crowded with hikers. It is best to avoid Friday and Saturday during high season when weekend tourists crowd in.
Make hotel reservations in advance. Yellow Mountains flights and hotel rooms are relatively more expensive, and train tickets may be difficult to obtain.
