Yellow River Mother SculptureThe Yellow River Mother Sculpture stands north of the Little West Lake Park, on Binhe Central Road of Lanzhou, which is the most beautiful one of its kind in China and is of a high artistic value.
It was appraised as a piece of excellent work in the First Chinese City Sculpture Design Contest. The Yellow River Mother Sculpture has become a landmark building of Lanzhou.
Cultural Connotation of the Sculpture
Designed by the famous sculpture, He E from Gansu, and sculptured by experts from Beijing Sculpture Factory on April 30th, 1986, the Yellow River Mother Sculpture measures 6 meters (20 feet) long, 2.2 meters (7.2 feet) wide, 2.6 meters (8.5 feet) tall and weighs over 40 tons.
It is a granite-structured full relief that’s composed of a mother and a baby boy. The pedestal of the sculpture is carved with patterns of ripples and fishes, which derive from the ancient painted pottery patterns of Gansu, fully reflecting the long history of Gansu Province.
In the sculpture, the tall mother has a graceful figure with her right arm slightly flexing, and she has an affable smiling look with beautiful hair hanging about her shoulders, lying on her back against the roaring Yellow River waves. A lovely baby boy snuggles close to her right side with his eyes slightly looking to the left, smiling unconsciously.
The sculpture has a profound message, and it symbolizes the Chinese people growing sturdily under the parenting of the Yellow River as well as the Chinese people’s persevering spirit that makes the world go round.
In front of the Yellow River Mother Sculpture stands the monument of “To the Cradle of the Chinese Nation – Yellow River Mother”, which was erected in August 1984, and it expresses the Chinese people’s great respect for the Yellow River.
