Longsheng, a county of Guilin, is a highly recommended destination. You can have an amazing hiking experience while enjoying breathtaking views of the terraces stretching along the hills. Appreciate the magnificent Longji Terraced Fields and experience unique minority customs.
The Longsheng Rice Terraces, also called the Longji Terraced Fields or Dragon’s Backbone Rice Terraces, offer some of the most fantastic scenery in China or, maybe, the whole world. A view of the cascading terraces gives one of the most exhilarating experiences that one can cherish for a lifetime.
Get the most out of your time in Longji with our Longji Terraced Fields Guide.
The most stunning and photogenic area of Jinkeng Red Yao terraced fields is farther up in the Longji mountains and larger than the Ping'an terraced fields, and is hence less visited, but more enthralling.
This area is the heart of the Red Yao Minority culture and you can take the chance of experiencing the way of life of this ethnic group.
The long curling ribbons of Longji Ping’an terraced fields used for growing rice were first laid down by the locals in the late 13th century. The Zhuang culture of the area has a long history and is still intact. It's the closer, smaller, more developed, and more touristy area of Longji.
Early autumn is the best to enjoy the golden rice fields. Visitors can also also enjoy beautiful sunsets and sunrises, and hiking to nearby villages.
A hike along the Longji Terraced Hiking Trails is a rewarding experience, the terraced fields being an excellent hiking destination. There are numerous trails to explore with the most popular lying between Ping’an and Dazhai, a village in the Jinkeng terrace area.
From Dazhai village, a stone-paved trail leads off to ping’an. With panoramic views of the rice fields glinting in the sun, wooden houses of the local people filled with vibrant life and adorned with ancient practices, the hike will surely give you an experience you will cherish.
The taste of Longsheng food is delicious and unforgettable. Have a taste of the sweet rice wine, oil tea, fragrant rice in a bamboo tube, and wind-dried fish among other local dishes.
We can even arrange for you to learn how to make bamboo tube rice and oil tea, with first hand experience and tuition from a local expert.
Longsheng rice terrace photography is an excellent activity for amateurs and enthusiasts. This area offers such magnificent views that it has become a popular photography destination. There are numerous points where the beauty of the fields can be captured in perfect way.
In the Jinkeng area, Xishan Shaoyue ('West Mountain Music') is the best place for photography as it has three great photographic outlooks.
At the Ping’an Zhuang terraces, Qingxing Banyue (‘Seven Stars Around the Moon’) is easily reachable and very photogenic. Jiulong Wuhu (‘Nine Dragons and Five Tigers’), which looks like a dragon’s backbone is also excellent for taking pictures.
Nestled among the sprawling rice terraces, near Ping'an Zhuang village, is the Longji Ancient Zhuang Village which offers a wonderful peek into an authentic ethnic culture.
The village has the largest number of diaojiaolou (hanging-leg building') wooden houses built by the Zhuang mountain people. It is home to four tribes with a history of more than 700 years. Visitors can tour the houses and get an insight into the ethnic lifestyle. The Zhuang museum displays the Zhuang minority culture and is worth a visit.
Yao people have been celebrating the Red Yao Ethnic Minority Festival around May-time since the Yuan dynasty.
For this festival, girls dress in their best red costumes. Many activities such as long-drum dance, selection of the village beauty, a long hair competition, and other activities are held for entertainment. It also serves as the "Valentine ’s Day" for the single Yao people.
The festivities of the Longji Ploughing Festival begin around 2nd May every year when the locals begin to irrigate the fields. It begins with music and dancing and progresses on as people pray for a good harvest while the oldest man of the village performs the rituals of irrigating the fields. The evening brings about celebration with singing and dancing performances until midnight.
The Jin Feng Festival is a traditional ethnic festival that is held earlier in the spring, around the beginning of March, in Miaoping Village near Longsheng. In order to thank the god of the Yao people who is believed to protect them from disasters and bless them, local residents dress in their traditional costumes and get together to celebrate Jin Feng Festival by dancing and enjoying great feasts. It has a history of more than 1000 years.
Situated in the Jiangdi village, about an hour from Longji, among cultural sites like Yao and Miao villages, the Hot Spring National Forest Park offers an array of enjoyable activities. The beautiful forested mountains are home to many endangered plants and rare animals that can be sighted and enjoyed by visitors.
Visitors can also enjoy the park’s famous hot springs with water boiling 1,200 meters underground. A dip in the spring water which contains a number of useful elements can have a healing effect for various diseases.
