The passenger flow volume to Hong Kong and Macau has continued to increase ever since Shenzhen citizens have been allowed to visit the two places by showing their identity cards. It can take hours for clearance to Hong Kong in some Shenzhen ports during busy periods.
Below is the clearance information for the nine ports used to enter or leave Shenzhen.
If you don’t have a China visa, the following four ports are the most useful because you can get a 5-day Visa on Arrival (VOA) or enjoy 144 hours of visa-free transit in Shenzhen:
Check out the following links to see how to apply for a Shenzhen VOA or enjoy the 144-hour visa-free transit policy:
Shenzhen Bao’an International Airport connects 27 overseas cities. If you arrive in Shenzhen by air, you can apply for a Shenzhen VOA or 144-hour visa-free transit.
Shenzhen Bao’an International Airport to Hong Kong and Macau: Ferries depart from nearby Fuyong Port (served by shuttles buses) to Hong Kong and Macau.
Shenzhen Bao’an International Airport to Luohu Port: Metro Line 1 (06:30–23:00) goes to Luohu Port from Airport East Station.
Shenzhen Bao’an International Airport to Huanggang Port: There are direct buses from Shenzhen Bao’an International Airport to Huanggang Port. The journey by bus costs 20 yuan and takes 45 minutes. Alternatively, you can take the metro (take Metro Line 11 to Chegongmiao Station then transfer to Line 7).
Luohu Port (called Lo Wu Control Point in Hong Kong) is the most important port connecting Hong Kong and mainland China.
If you travel from Hong Kong, you can apply for a 5-day Shenzhen Visa on Arrival in Luohu Port.
10 to 15 minutes
Luohu Port is crowded during weekends, festivals, and holidays. Set aside at least 1 hour for clearance if you are going to catch a train or flight.
Hong Kong to Luohu (Lo Wu) Port:
Hong Kong’s MTR East Rail Line departs from Hong Kong Hung Hom Station to Tsim Sha Tsui and takes you to Luohu Port. Notice that the East Rail Line also leads to another port called Lok Ma Chau. After a train departs to Luohu, there will be a train to Lok Ma Chau.
Hong Kong International Airport to Luohu (Lo Wu) Port:
Take a bus to a station on the East Rail Line then take a metro train to reach Luohu Port in about 2 hours.
Plan A: Take bus A43 to Sheung Shui, then take the MTR East Rail Line to Lo Wu.
Plan B: Take bus A41 to Sha Tin, then take the MTR East Rail Line to Lo Wu.
You can take a taxi, which will transport you to Lo Wu within an hour. If you travel alone, it may cost several times more than it will to use public transportation.
Shenzhen to Luohu Port:
Metro Line 1 goes to Luohu Station from Shenzhen city (including from Shenzhen Bao’an International Airport).
The second busiest port in Shenzhen (after Luohu), Huanggang is the third largest passenger transport port in China.
This is the only port that operates for 24 hours a day between Shenzhen and Hong Kong.
Huanggang Port is about 1 kilometer away from Futian Port.
If you travel from Hong Kong, you can apply for a 5-day Shenzhen Visa on Arrival at this port.
It is usually about 15 minutes.
During busy hours, the clearance time may exceed 1 hour and could be even longer during holidays, such as the National Day holiday and the Spring Festival.
If you are going to catch a flight or train during Chinese holidays, you are advised to use Futian Port instead.
Hong Kong International Airport to Huanggang Port:
07:00 to 12:00: Passengers can buy a bus ticket in Hong Kong International Airport Terminal 2 and take the direct bus to Huanggang Port.
00:00 to 07:00: There are no direct buses from the airport to Huanggang Port so you may need to take the overnight bus N21 to Hong Kong city center and then transfer to other vehicles. One plan is to take bus N21 to Mong Kok Police Station, then walk southwards along Nathan Road for 180 meters, turn west, and find “皇崗巴士太子上車站” to take the bus to Huanggang Port.
As it is not an easy job to deal with the transfer, you are advised to take a taxi late at night.
Shenzhen to Huanggang Port:
Take Metro Line 7 to Huanggang Checkpoint Station and leave via Exit F.
Shekou Port is also called Shekou Ferry Terminal. You can get your 5-day VOA there.
