Chengdu isn't famous for its museums, but it is perhaps one of the top 4 or 5 cities in Mainland China for museums. The main reason is that it has ancient archeological sites in it that are much older than the Terracotta Warriors, and these are almost as interesting in terms of artifacts.
Along with these two archeological sites, the Chengdu government has built large comprehensive museums for everything from Sichuan history, to Sichuan cuisine, to technology and science that are highly accessible for tourists in the central city area near subways. Other areas of Sichuan have good museums too. So based on popularity, content, and ease of access for tourists, here is our list of the Top 10 Museums people can visit in Sichuan.
The Sanxingdui Site Museum is the best museum in Sichuan, but it isn't the most popular because there is no quick metro link to it. It is just outside the Chengdu metropolitan region in Guanghan, and it is reachable in less than an hour from central Chengdu.
Sichuan's history starts with this site. It is the first known civilization in southern China.
The Jinsha Site Museum is the most popular museum in Sichuan. It is usually considered one of the top 8 things to do in Chengdu. Archeologists think it might be the same culture as the Sanxingdui site, but it is about 200 years younger. It's own subway station, the Jinsha Museum Station on line 7, makes travel convenient.
The Chengdu Museum New Building is a large new building that sits prominently on Tianfu Square in the exact center of Chengdu. It is the best comprehensive museum in Sichuan, and for learning about the region’s history, culture, and even geography, you can make it one of the first places to visit to help you know more about Sichuan and what you can do around Chengdu.
Dufu's Thatched Cottage is a large park and garden area. It is mainly about the favorite Chinese poet Dufu.
This is a large museum with 3 floors. It is rich with historical and cultural artifacts from around the whole region. Ethnic history is a highlight.
Dujiangyan: This little museum is free and has photographs and historical displays. But it's most interesting exhibit is the ancient 2,400-year-old water diversion project itself.
The huge Dujiangyan Irrigation Project is one of the most popular tourist places in Chengdu, and it is conveniently near a panda reserve. If you'd like to do a 1-Day Dujiangyan Panda Volunteer tour and see the project too afterward, contact us.
The Museum of Sichuan Cuisine might be one of your favorites if you like Sichuan food. You can learn to make Kang Pao Chicken and other dishes or relax in their tea house in between various activities. Or you could just eat! See our Half-Day Sichuan Cuisine Cooking Tour.
The Zigong Dinosaur Museum would be a lot more popular were it not in a remote area, Zigong, 2 hours from Chengdu by vehicle and about 4 to 8 hours away by public transportation. But if you love fossils and want to see a fossil site up close, you can do so here. It isn't a large museum though. A visit might take only two hours, and we can arrange convenient and quick transportation.
This is a museum about antique cars by the 3rd Ring Road. The collection of cars range from one of the world's first, a Benz, to Ferraris.
The Sichuan Science and Technology Museum is especially attractive for people who are interested in scientific and technology topics and want something to do when they are at Tianfu Square. It is a huge 4-story building in Chengdu's central scenic square.
