There are nine trains between Kunming and Dali. Most of them are terminated in Lijiang. Dali is an intermediate station along this rail route. Currently, only normal-speed trains are available on this rail line. High-speed trains between Kunming and Dali is expected to begin operating in July, 2018.

How to Choose Seat Class on Kunming - Dali Trains?

  • VIP cabin: this kind of class only appears on a few trains. The cabin can accommodate up to 3 persons. There is a lower berth and an upper berth in a private cabin, with a lockable door. The lower berth is wider than ordinary berth which can accommodate 2 people. The upper berth is for single occupancy with standard size. The VIP cabin is sold as a whole. You just buy one ticket for a whole cabin. And you can take one or two companions with you without extra tickets. 
  • Soft sleeper: there are 4 berths in a private compartment, with a lockable door.
  • Hard sleeper: there are 6 berths in a open-plan compartment.
  • Soft seat: there are 5 chairs (3+2) in a row across the carriage width. Every two rows are arranged face to face.
  • Hard seat: seats are arranged the same as soft seat carriages, only less comfortable. The ticket fare is the cheapest among all the seat classes. During peak season, hard seat carriages can be incredibly crowded. Passengers who hold standing tickets also stand in these carriages.

If you take an overnight train for the journey between Kunming and Dali, it is recommended to book VIP cabin, soft sleeper or hard sleeper. VIP cabins are perfect for trips of three people.  It is the most comfortable class and offers great privacy. Soft sleeper is also private and more comfortable than hard sleeper. But if you don't book the whole compartment, you need to share with strangers.

Hard seat and soft seat is not recommended for overnight train journeys and daytime train journeys that are longer than 5 hours.

High-Speed Trains Between Kunming And Dali

Kunming - Dali high-speed trains are expected to begin operating in July, 2018. After the line opens, the train travel time between Kunming and Dali will be reduced from 6 hours to 2 hours. And it will only take 3 hours from Kunming to Lijiang.  Kunming - Dali high-speed rail line will make stops at Guangtong, Shuxiong and Xiangyun, greatly improving the convenience of local tourism in Yunnan Province.
