Huangping County is located in the east of Guizhou Province. The county is a hub for Miao people. Huangping hosts many folk festivals held by Miao people each year, but the Lusheng Festival, held in the ninth month of the Chinese lunar calendar, is the most magnificent. The Lusheng Festival is celebrated in many small towns in the county during Octoberor November. The festival features a lot of Miao ethnic activities, such as a festival parade, bull fighting, horse racing, cock fighting, and people singing and dancing to the rhythm of the lusheng (a bamboo wind instrument). The main festival culminates in Gulong from the 27th to 29th of the ninth lunar month. Many people from the area gather in Gulong Town, and so the Gulong Lusheng Festival has become well known as the Miao festival with the largest number of participants. There is another Lusheng Festival held in Kaili, Guizhou Province in February every year that is similar with Gulong Lusheng Festival.
