The Hanging Monastery is at the foot of Hengshan Mountain, Shanxi (山西) Province. Built in 491 AD, it has survived more than 1,500 years. It was renovated and expanded during successive dynasties to its present-day scale. The Monastery hangs on the western face of cliff near the base of the mountain, 50 meters above the ground. The mountain protects the monastery from rain and snow, and also decreases the damage from long periods of sunshine. It is the only monastery in China that enshrines Confucianism and Taoism as well as Buddhism.
