Located in the famous West Street in Yangshuo, Cloud 9 Restaurant is a typical traditional Chinese restaurant; it is well known for its traditional local dishes and Sichuan cuisine. Cloud 9 Cooking School is on the third floor of the restaurant. The teachers in this cooking school have a lot of experience in cooking lessons. When taking part in the program, the cooking class covers not only how the dishes are prepared, but also the culture and customs of Chinese eating habits.
Details of the Cooking Class
The cooking class starts by visiting a local farmers' market which is divided into two separate parts: the vegetable part and the meat part. In the market you are able to see various types of vegetables, meats and other ingredients. Rows of stalls are lined up in the giant hall displaying fresh fruits and vegetables. The teacher will explain the use of each leaf, root and stem on the table. At the meat part, animals such as chickens, ducks, rabbits and cats are kept in cages alive. Visitors will be asked if they are willing to walk through the live animal market. It is a disturbing sight to see animals being killed in the market and sometimes people skip the visit.
After visiting the local farmers' market, you will go back to the cooking school. The practice class begins after several minutes' rest. Normally the class size is a minimum of two people and a maximum of 28 people and it is taught in English. Each participant is provided with their own personal cooking station that includes necessary ingredients, a gas burner, a full chopping block and a heavy Chinese wok. Three dishes which include two meat dishes and one vegetarian dish will be chosen by the participants together for the cooking lesson. During the class, the teacher will impart to you the stories and secrets of Chinese cuisine in a friendly and fun atmosphere. How do you properly heat a wok and when do you toss the fresh vegetables into the sizzling oil? How do you chop the meat in the correct way and how do you sear fish in a smoking hot pan? You will find the answers in the interesting cooking class.
After the class, you can sit down to enjoy your culinary creations and explore the Chinese culture with the other members.
