Weather: In September, it can be hot during the day at the beginning of the month. The highest temperature might reach 37 °C (99 °F). The evenings are cooler, with an average temperature of 20 °C (68 °F). At the beginning of the month, the leaves are still green; but by the end of the month, the autumn foliage becomes colorful. The weather is good for hiking and rafting.
September is the start of the dry season. There is only about 90 mm of total precipitation each September, and it rains about ten days of the month. Check the current weather and forecast>>
Clothing: Summer clothing is fine for daytime, but bring long sleeves and trousers to wear during the evenings. For rafting, wear a costume that covers your skin to avoid sunburn when it is sunny. We also recommend sunglasses and a hat.
Enjoy the scenery at Tianzishan: Tianzishan (天子山) is a mountain in Wulingyuan Scenic Area. It is a place to see the colorful trees and enjoy cool hiking weather. The top of the mountain is more than a kilometer (4,140 feet) above sea level.
It is also a place to do wildlife watching. The mountain has a natural wildlife reserve that covers 67 square kilometers (16,000 acres). You can hike up, but there is also a long tramway.
Walk on Tianmenshan: Another place to see the fall scenery all around is Tianmenshan (天门山). Most people feel the mountain is the main attraction of the whole park. It is called Tianmenshan (Heaven Gate Mountain) because there is a big hole in the middle of the mountain that looks like a big door in the sky. The hole is 131 meters high, 57 meters wide, and 60 meters long.
You can hike to the hole or climb all the way to the top of the mountain. Stair climbing to the top takes about two or three hours, and it might be too difficult if you are out of shape. At the top, there is a glass sidewalk that stretches 600 meters along the side of the peak a kilometer above the valley floor.
To avoid a hike, you can ride a cable car to the big hole or go all the way to the top. The cable ride is included in the entry ticket. A ride to the top of Tianmenshan takes half an hour.
Mid-Autumn Festival is the second biggest holiday in China, and it usually falls at the middle or end of September. It often falls around the time of the October 1 National Day holidays, and it becomes a part of the "golden week" holidays. It is the 15th day of the eighth lunar month.
You can expect large crowds if you come during this time, but you'll also be able to experience the modern Chinese festivities and the traditional celebrations of the ethnic people. Try the local moon cakes. They are like small fruitcakes made from the fruits and nuts of the season.
See the Tujia people: The ethnic minority has lived there for centuries. They have their own special customs for celebrating. During the evening of the Mid-Autumn Festival, the people might go out to watermelon patches to steal them and give them to couples with no children as a way to send good wishes for a child.
September and October are peak travel months due to the fine weather, the beautiful fall scenery, and the major national holidays. Most Chinese want to travel and sightsee during this time. If you want to take a tour of Zhangjiajie during this time, refer to Zhangjiajie Tours on our website for some excellent travel tips and our help arranging a visit by our experience.
Hotel accommodations might be twice as high as during the low season, and tickets for flights and trains are more expensive. We recommend that you book in advance. We can help obtain your tickets to avoid wasting your time at crowded stations waiting in ticket lines.
How about combining rest on a cruise ship such as a Guilin or Yangtze River cruise several days at Zhangjiajie? This would be a great combination during which you can see a variety of scenery. During a 7-day Zhangjiajie tour and Yangtze River cruise, hike to see the natural highlights and dine, relax, and watch China pass by on the Yangtze River. You can modify the tour details.
