INTRODUCTION

Shenzhen Bao'an International Airport (IATA Airport Code: SZX), aka Shenzhen Bao'an, is located in the Bao'an District of the city of Shenzhen, about 30 kilometers from the heart of the city. One of the four largest airports in China, Shenzhen Bao'an is the hub of Shenzhen Airlines and the focus city of China Southern Airlines. More than simply an airport, Shenzhen Bao'an combines air, land and sea transportation facilities, making it the only airport in China that seamlessly combines all three of these transportation media; Shenzhen Bao'an connects air flights to and from the city of Shenzhen with local ferries as well as with express buses between Shenzhen and Hong Kong and between Shenzhen and Macau.

As of 2011, Shenzhen Bao'an serves over 150 air routes, reaching over 100 domestic and international destinations (as the reader can readily imagine, many of China's larger cities may be an interim destination along a number of different flight itineraries). Shenzhen Bao'an is ranked among the Top 100 Airports of the World, and, not surprisingly, is one of the world's busiest airports measured in terms of passengers traffic.

TERMINAL BUILDINGS

The main terminal buildings at Shenzhen Bao'an International Airport are Terminal A, Terminal B and Terminal D (or terminals 1, 2 & 4, if you will, with terminal 3 lacking). A new Terminal 3, aka T3, which will lie apart from the other three terminals, all contiguous, is currently under construction (nearing completion, in fact) on reclaimed land lying between the original airport and former Pearl River Delta marshland, now built up. T3 will lie between the original runway and a new runway lying parallel to (of course), and just SW of the original runway.

Terminal A is the main terminal for domestic flights while Terminal D is the main terminal for international flights, with Terminal B representing a mix of both domestic and international flights. The new T3 terminal, once completed, will serve as the primary venue for international flights. It is a prestige project whose bidding was won by the Italian architectural firm, Fuksas, headed by Massimiliano and Doriana Fuksas.

Seen in its skeletal construction, T3 looks almost more "bird's-nest-like" than the Bird's Nest (the 2008 Olympic Stadium in Beijing) itself, making extensive use of a tubular, geometrical (or modified geodesic-like) pattern whose design is aimed at maximum structural integrity combined with maximum light penetration (the tubular, geometrical pattern will be covered in glass). T3, which is planned to come into service during the course of 2012, will be the "docking station" for all Airbus A380s landing at Shenzhen Bao'an International Airport. The Airbus A380 is of course the world's largest passenger airliner.

In addition to these four primary terminals, Shenzhen Bao'an also makes use of numerous smaller terminals in other airports, some large, some small, in the immediate region and farther beyond, including in the Yangtze River Delta area.

SHENZHEN BAO'AN AIR-SEA EXPRESS ROUTE TO HONG KONG AND MACAU

Shenzhen Bao'an International Airport offers a seamless air-sea suite ticket which, besides the flight ticket to Shenzhen, includes a hydrofoil ticket on a so-called TurboJET, either from Shenzhen (via Fuyong Port, which lies about 3.5 kilometers from the Shenzhen Bao'an terminal area) to Hong Kong or from Shenzhen to Macau, and vice versa: passage on a TurboJET from either Hong Kong or Macau to Shenzhen and a flight ticket onward to other domestic Chinese cities.

This is a unique feature of Shenzhen Bao'an International Airport and essentially makes Shenzhen Bao'an International Airport an auxiliary airport of both Hong Kong and Macau, as well as the primary airport of the increasingly important business hub city of Shenzhen, where most of Hong Kong's foreign embassies are situated. Shenzhen Bao'an International Airport's air-sea suite ticket is not only highly convenient, it is generally considerably cheaper than traditional direct flights between the regional cities of Chinese mainland and Hong Kong or Macau. Luohu Control Point Remote Terminal – is located at the first floor of Huaqiao Building, Heping Road, Luohu District, which is situated adjacent to Luohu Control Point (hence its name) and Shenzhen Railway Station. There are shuttle buses to Shenzhen Bao'an International Airport between the hours of 8:30 and 20:30, at intervals of 20 minutes. The trip takes about one hour. The fare for the shuttle bus is RMB 20, per person.
