More Than a Visit
Why Suzhou's Food and Its Opera Share the Same Gentle Temper

Guidebooks treat Suzhou's sweets and its opera as separate stops on separate days. Walk it with a guide instead, and the two start explaining each other: a plum-blossom pastry shaped for the eye, a bowl of tea kept deliberately plain so it never competes with a voice, a museum where scholars once set tea tables beside the stage. Neither was an occasion. Both were simply how people here arranged an ordinary afternoon.
