Picture this: an 11-story stilted building stacked into a cliffside, lighting up at dusk like something from the film Spirited Away. That's Hongya Cave, Chongqing's most iconic night view landmark.
To truly enjoy this visual feast, the light-up time and viewing angles matter a lot. In this guide, I'll show you the best viewing spots and some practical tips from my visit.

When Does Hongya Cave Light Up?
There's no fixed light-up time. It adjusts based on seasons and sunset. Here's the general pattern:
| Light up Time | Lights off |
|---|---|
|
11 pm |
When we visited on 17 November, the lights came on at 6:30 pm. By December, it had shifted earlier to 6:00 pm. You can check social media the day you visit for the exact light-up time. Locals usually post real-time updates.
Hongya Cave announces its lighting with a broadcast. You'll hear a loud announcement across the river, followed by a bell. Then the lights come on.
The broadcast is loud, so you can still hear it from the opposite bank. When you hear it, get your camera ready. The lights follow right after the bell.
If you want to avoid the crowds, it's best to visit around 10 pm.
Where is the Best Spot to See Hongya Cave?
Based on our on-the-ground experience, Qiansimen Bridge and the riverside park (Jiangtan Park) offer the best views and photos of Hongya Cave.
Our walking route was:
- Jiangtan Park → Grand Theatre Exit 1 → Qiansimen Bridge → Hongya Cave
This route works especially well. You can see Hongya Cave almost the entire way. As you walk across the bridge, you get closer and closer to it, from distant small to overwhelming. If you walk in the opposite direction, you don't get the same visual impact.
1. Qiansimen Bridge: The Classic Overhead View
I captured Hongya Cave from the bridgeThis is the most popular spot, and for good reason. You're looking down at Hongya Cave from the bridge, close enough to see details but high enough for that dramatic angle.
The bridge does get busy, but not overcrowded except on holidays. You can still find space to stop and take photos.
Another big plus: the bridge connects directly to the top level of Hongya Cave, as well as ground-level paths leading toward Jiefangbei. Whether you're walking over or taking a taxi, getting here is very convenient.

2. Jiangtan Park: Catch both Hongya Cave and the Bridge
At Jiangtan Park, you get a wide view of Hongya Cave across the river. The stilted buildings glow like a cyberpunk palace. Above it stretches Qiansimen Bridge.
Angle 1: Riverbank (Left of the Bridge)
View from Jiangtan ParkIt's the most layered and dramatic composition of Hongya Cave. The steel structure of Qiansimen Bridge forms a bold frame above you. Across the water, Hongya Cave lights up layer by layer.
But keep an eye. As you're standing on the riverbank, it's rocky, and dark at night, with no street lamps. The riverbank also see many people there, so not suitable for kids or the elderly.
Angle 2: Riverside Walkway (Right of the Bridge)
Hongya Cave with the bridge on the leftThis is the frontal view across the river. And don't want to squeeze for a photo spot? You find the best place. Most of the time, you'll only see several people around you, much quieter.
There are street lamps, railings, and a flat walkway. You can sit on the marble slope edge and take your time. It feels open and relaxed. It's also safer for kids and elderly travelers.
Angle 3: Jinshamen Night Hot Pot under the bridge
Imagine this: hot pot steaming on the table. Hongya Cave and the cyberpunk skyline light up across the river. A live singer performs nearby. The bridge glows above. All in one frame.
No rushing. No crowd hunting. Just sit, eat, and wait for the lights.
Smart Tips Before You Go
Qiansimen Bridge lights up separately from Hongya Cave. In the off-season, the bridge lights at 7:30 pm, and Hongya Cave at 6:30 pm. To catch both in the same shot, you can come around 8 pm.
Are you looking for those dreamy backlit portraits on social media, like holding fireworks, or sitting on a camp chair? Photography services are everywhere on the riverbank. Remember to negotiate. The reasonable price is usually around RMB 8-10 per photo.
If you're visiting on a Saturday, you'll catch a drone show at 8 pm.
From April to May, the Jialing River enters its low-water season. More of the riverbank is exposed. That means you can stand closer to Hongya Cave, making the view feel more immersive.
3. Across the Street from 1st Floor: Closest ground-level view
View from the ground floorThis is directly across from Hongya Cave's ground-floor entrance. You're looking up at 11 stories of glowing architecture towering above you, getting closer to see the structure, lantern, and decoration details.
You'll need to take the underground pedestrian tunnel from Hongya Cave's 1st floor. The road surface doesn't have a sidewalk, but there are clear signs pointing to the crosswalk tunnel.
However, it's also the most crowded spot. There's traffic almost every night. If you can, visit on a weekday instead of a weekend or a holiday night.

4. Grand Theatre Exit 1 Overpass - The Layered Look
You're standing on the pedestrian bridge that connects to Qiansimen Bridge. The winding walkways create a layered, almost highway-like aesthetic, very "La La Land" vibes.
Big plus: It's right at the metro exit. If you're taking the subway, you can step out of the station and walk straight onto the bridge, no long walks.
5. Dai Family Lane - The Side View
Everyone shoots Hongya Cave horizontally. But from Dai Family Lane (Daijia Alley), you get a side profile. The building's name appears in the frame, which adds context.
It's just right next to Hongya Cave's 1st floor. You don't need to cross any streets and can arrive easily.
There's also a cliffside walkway, perfect for a stroll and enjoying the river's night view after photos.
How to Get to Hongya Cave? By Taxi or Metro
Whether you're coming from the airport or any railway station, both taxi and metro work well.
By Taxi
Taking a taxi is the most convenient way. The ride usually takes 20-35 minutes from the airport or train station, and can drive you directly to Hongya Cave or any viewing spot.
For a more hassle-free experience, a private car is highly flexible. You can start from anywhere and easily connect Hongya Cave with other attractions in your itinerary.
By Metro
If you're taking the metro, the two most convenient stations are Xiaoshi Station (closest to Hongya Cave) and Grand Theatre Station (closest to the riverside park).
- Xiaoshi Station→Exit 9→walk 600m, about 10min→Hongya Cave
- Grand Theater Station→Exit 3 or Exit 1→walk 500m, 8min→Riverside Park
You can download the AMap Global (高德地图) to handle both ride-hailing and metro lines.
Walk to Hongya Cave
And if you're staying around Jiefangbei, at hotels like The Lixury Hotel Chongqing, Mercure, or The Westin, it's only a 5-10 minute walk to Hongya Cave.
Is Hongya Cave Worth Visiting on the Day or Going Inside?
It's not worth spending the day here, and you definitely don't need to go inside.
Hongya Cave during the dayDuring the day, the stilted buildings do have some character, but visually, they're not very different from other reconstructed "ancient-style" buildings in China.
You might be curious about what's inside? In reality, you'll mostly find hotpot restaurants and snack shops (slightly pricey), as it is just a commercial complex. Nothing particularly special.
And to explore inside, you'll need to move between 11 floor. Expect long queues for elevators, twisty staircases, and escalators that feel like a maze, crowds, and sometimes even a strange smell when it gets packed. All of this can easily make you regret going inside.
So, just come at night. Enjoy the view, take your photos, and move on.

What's the History of Hongya Cave?
Can you believe it? This massive riverside complex has a 2,300-year history.
What's even more surprising? It was once a half-abandoned construction site for decades. However, today's glittering Hongya Cave, is privately owned.
Hongya Cave was originally an ancient city gate, which is where its name comes from. Over time, wars and the decline of the river docks took their toll. So from the 1940s to the 1990s, the area turned into a cluster of unsafe, run-down houses, more like a slum than a landmark.
This dilapidated scene changed between 2002-2006, when Ms. He Yongzhi, founder of the Little Swan Group, invested RMB 385 million to rebuild the site. So what you see today is actually a modern reconstruction. Still, back then, Hongya Cave wasn't very well known.
The real turning point came in 2018. As short-video apps like TikTok exploded, Hongya Cave shot to viral fame. Soon, almost everyone visiting Chongqing came here to take photos.
It quickly became the city's must-see landmark, with visitor numbers ranking second only to the Forbidden City that year.
