Expect fog during Nov.- Mar. Chongqing often experiences foggy weather. If you book a high-floor river-view room, you may get a misty view outside the window during the day.

If enjoying open skyline views is important to you, we recommend staying between April and October for better visibility.

Stay in Jiefangbei: If You Want the Most Convenience

If you're visiting Chongqing for the first time, no matter for family, couples, friends, or solo trips, Jiefangbei can always be your top choice.

Most must-see attractions are concentrated here and are walkable. For example, from Jiefangbei Pedestrian Street (the very center), you can walk to:

Bayi Food Street;
World Trade Center 131;
WFC Huixianlou Observation Deck;

Even if you only have a short stay, it lets you cover more spots in less time. You can even return to your hotel for a quick rest before heading out again at night. Very efficient.

2. You get the widest hotel choices

Most of Chongqing's hotels are concentrated here. You'll find many international brands, reliable service standards, and plenty of mid-range and budget options.

3. You enjoy convenient transportation

You can easily find three metro lines, extensive bus routes, taxis, the cableway, and ferry services here. They will lead you to attractions across the city, such as Liziba, Ciqikou, Xiahaoli, etc.

Chaotianmen Dock is also located here. If you also take the Yangtze River Cruise, it's convenient to board.

4. You are surrounded by food and shopping

Everything from luxury malls to budget shops, food streets, local eateries, and street snacks is right at your doorstep.

After sightseeing, you can easily enjoy some casual dining and a bit of shopping.

Our advice:

We don't recommend staying in small guesthouses or very budget hotels in Jiefangbei area. The facilities and services may not always match the photos you see online.

Lower-floor rooms can be noisy, so choose a higher-floor hotel if possible. It's usually quieter, and the views tend to be better.

Recommended Hotels:

5-star like InterContinental Chongqing Raffles City; The Lixury Hotel Chongqing; JW Marriott Hotel Chongqing; and The Westin Chongqing Liberation Square

4-star like Four Points by Sheraton; Mercure Hotel Jiefangbei; Somerset Yangtze River;TRYP BY WYNDHAM

Stay on Nanbin Road: If River Views Matter to You Most

Nanbin Road sits right along the Yangtze River, just across from Chongqing's Jiefangbei CBD. From here, you get one of the best panoramic views of both the river and the city's cyberpunk skyline. It's quieter, less crowded, and usually more cost-effective, too.

This area feels more local and lived-in. You'll easily find affordable local eateries around. There are also plenty of riverside bars, perfect for a relaxed drink with a view.

Area 1: Longmenhao Stretch (Most Recommended)

Mist Isle Riverside Resort Hotel; THE LILY

Stay in Guanyinqiao: If You're Here Mainly for Food

Guanyinqiao Business DistrictGuanyinqiao Business District

Guanyinqiao gathers the most food in Chongqing.

Step out of your hotel, and food is everywhere. Not only the 11,000 sqm indoor food street, but also a lot of scattered local eateries, street snacks, and family-run restaurants.

Staying here also gives you:

  • Budget-friendly hotels (many basic rooms are 150-400 CNY)
  • Shopping mall from regular, luxury, to anime-themed
  • Close to the airport and Chongqing North Railway Station
  • 2 metro lines, convenient for getting around

Downsides:

  • Some traffic still, and it can be a bit noisy at night
  • Most major attractions are further away (but Liziba is nearby)
  • Mostly independent hotels, fewer chains

Recommended boutique hotels:
Doubletree by Hilton Chongqing; Hyatt Regency Chongqing

What are the Recommended Hotels in Chongqing?

Chongqing is a mountain city with dense and layered buildings. Maybe you have seen on social media that many budget and mid-tier hotels are located inside the same mixed-use buildings.

Different hotel names. Different floors. Shared lifts. You may feel unsafe. Sometimes, cars can't even drive right to the entrance. Dragging luggage uphill in an 8D city is not fun.

That's why all the hotels we recommend are:

  • Car-accessible
  • Easy to locate
  • Personally inspected or stayed in by us
  • Front desk staff able to communicate in basic English

The price range is from standard rooms to suites.

InterContinental Chongqing Raffles City (Jiefangbei)

Luxury Price ranges: 2,000-4,000 CNY

One of the most luxurious hotels in Chongqing. It sits inside the sail-shaped towers of Raffles City, very iconic. Even YouTube star IShowSpeed stayed here during his trip to China in Chongqing.

Most rooms enjoy sweeping river views. Beyond that, you can also:

  • Wander along the sky corridor high above the rivers
  • Enjoy a drink at the garden bar
  • Watch the drone show at their restaurant (from the back-facing angle)
  • Step onto the outdoor terrace and glass viewing platform for stunning skyline views

It's also best for Yangtze River cruise guests, as Chaotianmen Dock is right downstairs. On embarkation day, you avoid long cross-city transfers.

The Lixury Hotel Chongqing (Jiefangbei)

Luxury Price ranges: 1,500-2,800 CNY

The biggest highlight here is the view. The hotel shares the same building as the WFC Huixianlou Observation Deck, so you enjoy a similar panoramic perspective.

The Lixury Hotel ChongqingThe Lixury Hotel Chongqing

Choose rooms numbered 01-09 if you book a river-view room. The lower the room number, the wider and better the river view.

You can walk 5-8 minutes to Jiefangbei Pedestrian Street and Hongya Cave.

Downside: no swimming pool

Four Points by Sheraton (Jiefangbei)

4-star Price ranges: 500-1,600 CNY

If your top priority is the most central and convenient location, this is it. The hotel sits right in the center of Jiefangbei. Step downstairs, and you're already on the pedestrian street.

Some rooms face the Liberation Monument directly. Location-wise, it doesn't get more convenient and cost-effective than this.

On New Year's Eve, the area gets extremely crowded. But if you want to catch the countdown, you can enjoy a bird's-eye view from your room, no squeezing through dense crowds.

Somerset Yangtze River Chongqing (Jiefangbei)

4-star Price ranges: 400-1,300 CNY

If you're looking for better value while avoiding the crowds, this is a smart option.

Somerset Yangtze River ChongqingIts window views and suit living room

Located along the Yangtze River outside the CBD, the surroundings are much quieter and rarely congested. From your room, you can enjoy open river views and see the golden twin towers along Nanbin Road across the water, especially beautiful at night.

Downsides: There are very limited dining options nearby. It's also farther from the metro and main attractions, about a 20-minute walk to Jiefangbei Pedestrian Street and 18 Steps.

And you'll mainly rely on taxis to get around.

Chongqing Jixiashan SUNYATA Resort Hotel (Nanbin Road)

4-star Price ranges: 1,500-3,000 CNY

If you like boutique hotels, SUNYATA is one of the few retro villa-style stays in Chongqing.

Chongqing Jixiashan SUNYATA Resort HotelChongqing Jixiashan SUNYATA Resort Hotel

It's located in Longmenhao Old Street, so when you stay here, you'll feel a sense of calm right in the middle of the city. For senior travellers or quiet seekers, it's quite pleasant to stay in.

As you relax in your room or sit in the courtyard, the river views you enjoy are quite different from those in the high-floor hotels.

The flowing Yangtze River, with the yellow Huguang Guild Hall, the red Dongshuimen Bridge, and the moving Yangtze River Cableway, all unfold right before your eyes. Even without leaving the hotel, you can capture plenty of stunning photos.
