Shanghai Weather in October 2026: Mild, Sunny, Golden Week

Written by Carper Updated May. 8, 2026

October is one of the best months of the year to visit Shanghai. Sunny days are the norm, with mild temperatures, low humidity, and little rain, making it ideal for outdoor exploration.

Expect average temperatures to range from 16°C (61°F) to 22°C (72°F), with about six rainy days bringing 56 mm (2.2 inches) of precipitation. Evenings are cooler, typically dropping to 13–15°C (55–59°F).

There is no need to worry about typhoons, since the typhoon season is typically over by October, unlike in August, with higher risks.

Is October a Good Time to Visit Shanghai?

Yes, we always recommend this period to our clients for its generally great weather. But with flexible dates, you can do even better.

Here's an insider tip: October is a month of two halves.

If you want the most reliably mild weather with fewer people, aim for mid-to-late October. For the best balance of comfort and value, this is your clear winner.

Early October (October 1–7) coincides with China's National Day holiday, which is one of the busiest times of the entire year.

Attractions are packed, and hotel rates, flights, and tickets all spike. Based on recent weather patterns, daytime temperatures can still feel like late summer (Shanghai reached 36°C / 97°F on October 6, 2025). Evenings cool down quickly, so layers are essential.

From mid-October through the end of the month, the weather settles into its most comfortable rhythm. Daytime highs hover around 20–22°C (68–72°F), nights are crisp but not cold, and humidity stays low. The crowds have also thinned out after the holiday.

Tips for Traveling During China's National Day Holiday

Normally, we suggest avoiding the Golden Week of October (October 1–7) for a better experience. However, if your travel dates are fixed, these practical tips could be helpful.

1. Book Everything Well in Advance

Don't wait until the last minute for a trip during the Golden Week. Hotels, flights, train tickets, and popular attraction admissions can sell out weeks before the holiday.

Secure your reservations at least 1 month ahead, and for top spots like Shanghai Disneyland or Yu Garden, book as soon as tickets are released.

2. Travel During October 5–7 for Smaller Crowds

If your schedule allows, start your Shanghai trip on the 5th or 6th for much fewer people.

The first four days of the holiday (October 1st to 4th) are the most crowded. By October 5th, many tourists from other places begin their return journeys, and Shanghai becomes noticeably quieter.

3. Avoid Peak Travel Days When Entering or Leaving Shanghai

The worst days for transportation are October 1-2 (arrivals) and October 6-7 (departures). Train stations and airports are overcrowded, and tickets are hardest to get.

If you must travel on these dates, be sure to book your tickets in advance and allow ample time for check-in and security checks.

4. Swap Overcrowded Landmarks for Alternatives

Instead of struggling through the crowds in Zhujiajiao Water Town, head to Tongli Water Town, which is quieter, more authentic, and also close to Shanghai.

For history enthusiasts, we suggest avoiding the long lines at the Shanghai Museum (East Branch) and visiting the Aurora Art Museum. The entrance fee is enough to deter a large portion of tourists who only visit free attractions, not to mention the museum's extensive collection of exquisite artifacts, allowing you to quietly appreciate the beauty of art.

If you want to enjoy a skyline view similar to the Bund but avoid crowds, head to the Sinar Mas Plaza on the North Bund, where you can grab a drink and admire the same iconic skyscrapers from a tranquil observation deck.

October's mild, dry weather makes almost every regular attraction in Shanghai enjoyable.

The Bund, the French Concession, Yu Garden, and the water towns of Zhujiajiao or Tongli are all at their best without summer heat or winter chill. It's also a great time for observation decks on skyscrapers like the Shanghai Tower or Oriental Pearl Tower, where visibility is excellent.

And you also should not miss out on Shanghai Disneyland's Halloween season. From early October through the end of the month (October 4 to November 1 in 2025), the park transforms with pumpkin decorations, villains parade with Donald and Daisy Duck after nightfall, and you can meet Judy and Nick dressed in Halloween costumes in Zootopia.

What to Pack and Wear in Shanghai in October

October in Shanghai brings comfortable mild days and crisp evenings.

It is usually quite cool, but based on the weather data of 2025, early October can still feel like late summer, especially during the National Day holiday, so bring a few short-sleeved T-shirts and light pants.

Sunscreen and sunglasses are still useful, especially during sunny afternoons. Rain is rare, but a small folding umbrella doesn't hurt.

By mid-to-late October, daytime highs settle around 20–22°C (68–72°F), so pack with long-sleeved shirts and trousers.

Evenings in October are generally cool, sometimes to 13–15°C (55–59°F), so remember to take a mid-layer like a sweater or hoodie, and a windproof jacket with you, especially if you plan to take evening walks along the Bund or a Huangpu River night cruise.
