Is It Really Worth Making a Trip to Yunnan in February?
In our opinion, yes—especially if you're looking for variety rather than beach weather.
February lets you experience several different sides of Yunnan in a single trip.
One day, you could be wandering through a sunlit ancient town. The next, you're looking up at snow-capped peaks under a deep blue sky. By the end of your journey, you might be relaxing among the tropical scenery of southern Yunnan.
Because February falls in the dry season, you're also more likely to enjoy clear mountain views and comfortable weather for exploring outdoors.
If that sounds like the kind of trip you're after, February is one of our favorite months to visit.
That said, it's not the right season for everyone. If you're hoping to see Yunnan at its greenest, expect warm temperatures throughout your trip, or chase spring blossoms across the province, you'll probably enjoy March or April more.
One exception is Chinese New Year.
If your trip falls around the holiday period (around February 5–11, 2027), expect higher demand and more visitors at popular attractions. Traveling outside these dates allows you to enjoy February's pleasant weather with a more relaxed pace.

For first-timers, the Kunming-Dali-Lijiang-Shangri-La route is a classic choice.
However, in February, we recommend focusing on Kunming, Dali, and Lijiang, as Shangri-La is still in deep winter and requires more preparation for cold conditions.

- Day 2: Visit Stone Forest and Dianchi Lake, then transfer to Dali
- Day 3: Explore Dali Old Town with Bai cuisine and learn traditional tie-dyeing in Zhoucheng Village

- Day 5: Arrive in Lijiang and explore Lijiang Ancient Town
- Day 6: Visit Jade Dragon Snow Mountain and Jade Lake Village

The route moves from lower to higher elevations, allowing you to gradually adjust to changing temperatures and altitude while progressing from relaxed city experiences to mountain scenery. This is especially helpful in February, when higher areas are colder.

What to Pack for Different Parts of Yunnan in February
February in Yunnan is all about layers. The right clothing depends more on where you go than the month itself.
In Kunming, Dali, and Lijiang, you can expect colder mornings and evenings, with mild and often sunny afternoons. A light down jacket, sweaters, and long-sleeve tops work well.
In Shangri-La, winter conditions are still strong throughout the day. Even in daytime, you will still need proper winter clothing, including a warm base layer, a thick sweater, and a down jacket.
In southern Yunnan, such as Xishuangbanna and Pu'er, the weather is much warmer. Light short-sleeve tops, T-shirts, and a thin jacket for evenings are usually enough.

If snowy plateau landscapes are your priority, it can still be worth visiting. Just be prepared for freezing mornings and evenings, possible icy roads, and shorter periods of comfortable outdoor sightseeing.
3. Could the Weather Block the View of Jade Dragon Snow Mountain?
February is one of the best times to visit Jade Dragon Snow Mountain because the dry season usually brings clearer skies than the rainy months.
However, no mountain view can ever be guaranteed. Weather in high-altitude areas changes quickly, and clouds or fog may still block the scenery. Checking the local weather forecast a few days before your visit gives you the best chance of clear views.
4. Will High Altitude Be a Problem During a February Trip?
Higher-altitude destinations such as Lijiang and Shangri-La can still cause altitude discomfort, and the cold weather may make the symptoms feel more noticeable. Most visitors adjust well with a gradual itinerary that starts in lower-altitude areas such as Kunming and Dali.
