Fun and Not Touristy Things to Do in Beijing

Written by Laura Ding Updated May. 23, 2025

I have been working as a tour guide in Beijing for 17 years. While leading tour groups, I often get asked by visitors if there are any fun and less touristy experiences in Beijing besides famous attractions like the Forbidden City. So, in my spare time, I've compiled the following recommendations.

These activities offer an authentic taste of Beijing, far from the usual tourist trails. Perfect for adventurous souls, history buffs, and culture enthusiasts alike, each experience promises to reveal the true essence of Beijing's rich heritage and vibrant local life.

15 Years as a Local Guide in Beijing

Hello! I'm Laura. I came to Beijing for my education in 2005, and after graduating, I worked as a tour guide here. I have lived in Beijing for 20 years, and it has always held a special place in my heart! I am fascinated by the city's rich history and culture. I love strolling through the hutongs, where time seems to slow down. The traditional courtyard houses and the delicate performances of Beijing opera make me feel like I'm part of a living history book.

1. Hike the Great Wall at Jiankou

If you're seeking the Great Wall without the crowds, Jiankou offers a rugged hike with stunning views. This section, less restored than its famous counterparts, provides a glimpse into the wall's raw beauty and historical significance.

Tips:
Best visited in spring or autumn when the weather is mild and the landscape is adorned with wildflowers. This route is appropriate for young energetic people.

See our 1-Day Jiankou Great Wall Hiking Tour.

2. Cycle or Walk Through Hutongs at Dawn

Hutong cyclingHutong cycling

Experience the tranquility of Beijing's historic alleyways, the hutongs, before the city wakes up.

This early morning bike ride or walking takes you past traditional courtyard homes, where you can witness locals starting their day – from tai chi practitioners to vendors setting up shop. It's an immersive way to understand Beijing's everyday rhythm.

Personally, I like the route starting from Di'anmen, passing through Shichahai, Prince Gong's Mansion, Yandai Xiejie, Wudaoying Hutong, and ending at the Guozijian Street. This route delves into the heart of the hutongs, offering an authentic taste of old Beijing.

You can follow us 1-Day Hutong Tour to explore more.

3. Take a Local Market Tour and Cooking Class

Start your day at Beijing Chaoyangmen Nei Market, selecting fresh ingredients alongside locals before joining a cooking class to prepare classic Beijing dishes.

Under the guidance of a skilled chef, you'll learn to recreate favorites like Kung Pao chicken, handmade noodles, and dumplings, followed by enjoying your homemade feast. A hands-on experience that engages all senses.

4. Visit Yandaixiejie Snack Street to Taste Traditional Beijing Snacks

Yandaixiejie StreetYandaixiejie Street

Beijing's most famous food street, where you'll sample a variety of mouthwatering snacks like jianbing (savory crepes), zhajiangmian (spicy noodles), and baozha bing (deep-fried dough).

This late-night exploration is perfect for foodies eager to taste the authentic flavors of Beijing.

5. Attend a Calligraphy Class with a Master Artist

Write calligraphy under the guidance of a master artist. Learn the strokes and meaning behind this meditative practice, which not only enhances your appreciation for Chinese culture but also allows you to create a personalized memento of your trip. It is suitable for all ages and skill levels.

6. Explore the 798 Art District

798 Art District798 Art District

Wander through the streets of 798, Beijing's premier art hub housed in former industrial buildings. Galleries showcase contemporary Chinese art, while trendy cafes and boutiques invite leisurely browsing.

This area pulses with creativity and offers a stark contrast to the city's historical sites.

I like the Luo Guanzhong's exhibition in the 798 Art District much. It is an unforgettable art feast. It gives us an opportunity to appreciate his outstanding artistic achievements up close and feel the unique charm of modern art. If you pass by the 798 Art District, don't miss this wonderful exhibition.

Tips:

  • Weekdays are less crowded than weekends.
  • Check online for ongoing events or exhibitions.
  • Spend an afternoon here to fully appreciate the artistic vibe. (Exhibitions and activities close at 5:30pm, last entry is 5pm)

7. Visit the Temple of Heaven Early in the Morning and Learn Chinese Tai Chi

I recommend arriving at the Temple of Heaven around 7 o'clock in the morning. At this time, there are relatively fewer visitors in the park, allowing you to better appreciate its tranquility and beauty.

Near the Seven Star Stones area at the east gate of Temple of Heaven, you could find people doing Tai Chi. Feel free to join them.

There are other activities like playing shuttlecock, and the Matchmaking Corner if you have an unmarried child. You could talk to them with the help of your local guide. Remember, you can only see these activities in the morning. If you come in the afternoon, local people have already gone home.

8. Watch a Traditional Peking Opera Performance

Peking Opera PerformancePeking Opera Performance

Immerse yourself in China's dramatic art form with a ticket to a Peking Opera show. The colorful costumes, intricate face painting, and unique vocal techniques tell stories steeped in history.

Li Yuan Theater offers an intimate setting to enjoy this cultural gem, complete with English subtitles for better understanding.

Many of my clients have told me that Peking Opera was an impressive artistic expression after they watched the performance. They also said Chinese opera was truly a unique and impressive form of artistic expression.

The way the performers used their bodies, gestures, and voices to convey emotions and tell the story was captivating. It's so different from the theater they have in their country, and they really appreciate the opportunity to experience it firsthand.

Tips:

  • Book tickets in advance (your local guide could help you).
  • Consider pre-reading about the stories or characters for deeper understanding.
  • Learn how to tell the Peking Opera roles' personalities from their painted faces.

9. Taste Authentic Peking Duck at Quanjude Restaurant in Wangfujing

Beijing is famous for Peking Duck. But skip the tourist traps and head where the locals do for a truly authentic meal. Perfect for foodies and culinary adventurers.

You could watch as the duck is expertly roasted in an open oven. Savor every crispy bite of skin and tender meat, paired with pancakes, hoisin sauce, and scallions.

Personally, I like the Quanjude restaurant in Wangfujing. It is the biggest restaurant that I have seen in Beijing, making it easier for me to book a table for my guests.

The Quanjude Roast Duck Restaurant is not only larger in scale than other roast duck restaurants, but also more magnificent and upscale in terms of decoration.

The restaurant has five floors, including a modern cuisine area, a golden hall, and a traditional cuisine restaurant. It can accommodate thousands of diners and provide you with exquisite dishes and excellent service. See more on Where to Eat Peking Duck in Beijing

Tips:

  • Make a reservation, especially during peak hours.
  • Ask for recommendations from staff for the best way to enjoy your meal.
  • Set aside an hour to relish this dining experience.

10. Have a Nighttime Walk Along Shichahai Lake

Have a Nighttime Walk Along Shichahai LakeHave a Nighttime Walk Along Shichahai Lake

After dark, take a leisurely walk around Shichahai Lake, surrounded by hutongs and shimmering lights. This picturesque setting offers a romantic escape from the city's hustle and bustle. Ideal for couples and solo travelers alike.

You could admire the reflection of colored lanterns on the calm waters. Consider stopping for a drink or dessert at one of the lakeside bars or cafes.

Tips:

  • Evenings, especially post-dinner, are the best times to visit.
  • Be cautious when crossing busy streets around the lake.
  • Consider renting a boat if available for a unique perspective of the area (only in July and August).

Each of these experiences has been carefully curated to provide a deeper connection with Beijing's soul, away from the well-trodden paths. Whether it's through engaging with local traditions, savoring culinary delights, or exploring hidden corners, these activities promise memories that will last a lifetime.
