If this is your first time in Guangzhou, the biggest accommodation decision is usually not which hotel to book, but whether to stay in a modern, convenient area or a more traditional part of the city.
Most of our clients want both: easy transportation and a chance to experience the Guangzhou they come to see. The good news is that you don't have to choose one or the other.
For most first-time visitors, staying around Beijing Road offers the best balance of convenience, sightseeing access, and local atmosphere. If you're visiting for the Canton Fair, however, staying near Pazhou is usually the smarter choice.
Below, we'll walk through the pros and cons of each area so you can choose the one that fits your trip best.
The 7 Main Areas to Consider When Choosing Where to Stay in Guangzhou
New Guangzhou CBD Area:
- Zhujiang New Town: Close to Canton Tower, enjoy stunning city night views
- Pazhou: Only recommended for Canton Fair visitors
- Near Guangzhou Station or Guangzhou East Station: Only recommended for travelers on a train layover like 0.5-1 day
Old Guangzhou Area:
- Beijing Road: Enjoying Tradition & Modernity, Convenience & Local Flavor
- Shamian Island: Offering a quiet, atmospheric stay with European charm
- Yongqing Fang: Offering an atmospheric, walkable experience close to traditional architecture and local food.
- Shangxiajiu: similar to Yongqing Fang, offering easy access to street food and shopping
Why Beijing Road Is Your Top Choice
When recommending accommodation to our clients, we generally take multiple factors into consideration: distance to the main attractions, plenty of food options nearby, free evening stroll, and the convenience of transportation. The Beijing Road area perfectly ticks all these boxes.
This is also why many of our private Guangzhou tours are designed around this area. Whether you're spending one day on a layover or two to three days discovering the city, Beijing Road provides one of the most convenient starting points for experiencing both historic Guangzhou and its modern side.
- Close to must-visit attractions: Chen Clan Ancestral Hall, Yongqing Fang, Shamian Island, Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hall, and Yuexiu Park are all just a 10–15 minute drive away. Canton Tower is about 30 minutes by car. Many of these are also easily reachable by metro.
- Great for shopping and strolling: You can walk along the pedestrian street for shopping, or head to the People's Park, just 10 minutes away for a relaxing evening walk.
- Food at your doorstep: After a day of sightseeing, you can walk out of your hotel and choose between dim sum restaurants, dessert shops, and late-night noodle stalls within a few minutes.
- Excellent transport links: Beijing Road is served by metro lines 1, 2, and 6. The streets are wide, and parking is relatively convenient. The main train station is about 10 minutes away by car, and getting to other parts of the city is effortless.
Hotels Recommended Near Beijing Road
Many travelers only care about a hotel's star rating when choosing where to stay. However, because Guangzhou commercialized early, many of its five-star hotels are old. Some of them have oldstyle facilities and room layouts.
So when choosing a hotel, pay attention to the facilities and the year of its last renovation. Below are some hotels that our actual clients have stayed in and given good reviews.
| Hotel | Star Rate and Price (per night) | Why Book It |
|---|---|---|
| Yuexiu Hotel Guangzhou, Curio Collection by Hilton | ★★★★★ ~$100–$160 |
Renovated in 2023. Modern comfort inside a historically building near Yuexiu Park. |
| Canton Hotel Guangzhou, Tapestry Collection by Hilton | ★★★★ ~$80–$130 |
Opened in 2026. 5-minutes' walking distance to the Nanyue King Museum and the Beijing Road. |
| Mercure Guangzhou Beijing Road | ★★★ ~$40–$60 |
Opened in 2023. Clean, simple, budget-friendly. |
Zhujiang New Town - Best for Modern Skyline and Pearl River Views
Compared to the Beijing Road area, the biggest advantage of the Zhujiang New Town area is its proximity to Canton Tower. This allows you to enjoy the stunning night view of the tower paired with the Pearl River and skyline.
When you step out at night, the streets feel bright, organized, and easy to navigate. There are many leisure trails along the Pearl River. You can take a leisurely walk along the Pearl River and enjoy the city views on both banks.
One of the disadvantages is that this area is a bit far from old Guangzhou (about half an hour by car). You can plan a day trip to explore the old town's attractions.

Note on pricing: Due to its proximity to the Canton Fair complex, hotels rates increase by two to three times during the Canton Fair (Apr 15th - May 5th, October 15th - November 5th). If you're visiting during those periods, book at least 2–3 months in advance.
Yongqing Fang, Shamian Island, Shangxiajiu: Best for Old Guangzhou Atmosphere and City-Walking
These areas feel different from the rest of the city. You'll see older arcade buildings, tree-lined streets, and a quieter pace.
In addition, there are also many hubs for authentic Guangzhou food, such as Duobao Road, Enning Road, and Shangxiajiu Pedestrian Street.
Due to the area's long history, some roads are quite narrow. Combined with the concentration of many cultural attractions, you may encounter traffic jams during peak hours.

|---|---|---|

Canton Fair Visitors Should Choose Haizhu District / Pazhou
If your visit is connected to the Canton Fair, this is the most practical base. The Pazhou area is where the exhibition complex is located, and staying nearby significantly reduces commuting time during busy fair days.
Hotels here are mainly modern business hotels and serviced apartments. Outside of the fair season, the area can feel quieter and more residential.
This option is less about sightseeing convenience, and more about minimizing travel stress during a very schedule-heavy trip.
Hotels Recommended for Canton Fair
| Hotel | Star Rate and Price (per night) | Why Book It |
|---|---|---|
| The Westin Pazhou | ★★★★★ ~$150–$250 |
Renovated in 2023. Panoramic views of the Pearl River. It is also connected via a sky bridge to exhibition halls of the Canton Fair. |
| Shangri-La Hotel Guangzhou | ★★★★★ ~$160–$280 |
Renovated in 2018. The hotel is just a 5-minute walk from the Canton Fair Complex. Featured in Pearl River views and tropical garden grounds. |
Note on budget options: Mid-range and budget hotel choices in Pazhou are limited. If you're attending the fair on a tighter budget, staying nearby areas by metro line 8 is a practical alternative. The ride to Pazhou takes around 20–30 minutes.
Canton Fair note: Hotels throughout all of Guangzhou, not just Pazhou, raise prices significantly during mid-to-late April and mid-to-late October. If your visit overlaps with the fair, book early and expect rates 2–4× above normal.
