We are frequently asked by our clients visiting Shanghai on business whether it is possible to make a round trip to visit the Great Wall in a single day.
Yes, you can visit the Great Wall from Shanghai, but we would not recommend a same-day high-speed train trip. Flying to Beijing and staying overnight would be more practical and less exhausting.
If you only have one day, you can still do it. Fly rather than take the train, leave Shanghai early, and arrange a private car or a taxi for all your transportation.
Mutianyu or Badaling: Which Great Wall Section Should You Choose?
For a Shanghai day trip, Mutianyu is the section we'd choose for most travelers. Aim to arrive at Mutianyu as early as you can to avoid the crowds.
Given that the distance and travel time from the airport to Mutianyu and Badaling are similar, and though Mutianyu is not as classic as Badaling, it offers equally impressive scenery; furthermore, with fewer tourists than Badaling, the experience there is more comfortable.
It also works well when you only have around 3 hours because you don't need to spend a full day hiking. Take the scenic-area transport toward the Wall and use the cable car or other uphill options instead of walking all the way from the valley.
Mutianyu Practical Information
- Opening hours: 7:30–18:00 weekdays and 7:30–18:30 weekends (16 March to 15 November) / 8:00–17:30 daily (16 November to 15 March).
* Ticket sales stop one hour before closing; ticket check closes 30 minutes before. - Tickets: 45 RMB/pp with a postcard ticket; 200 RMB/pp includes admission, round-trip cable car, and round-trip shuttle bus within the scenic area.
- Mutianyu currently uses real-name ticketing: one ticket per passport per day, released up to 30 days in advance. As a foreign visitor, you can book with your passport at its official website: Mutianyu Great Wall.
Flight or High-Speed Train: Which Should You Take?
Choose a Flight if You Want to See the Great Wall in One Day
This is the only option we'd suggest for a same-day Shanghai → Great Wall → Shanghai trip.
A flight takes about 2 hours in the air and ranges from 500–1000 RMB one way. You can land in Beijing in the morning, drive directly to the Great Wall, spend around 3 hours on the Wall, then return to the airport for your evening flight.
The catch is that your schedule needs to be tight and leaves very little room for delays.
The ideal 1-day round-trip itinerary will roughly be like:
- 5:00: Leave your Shanghai hotel and arrive at SHA (allows 1–2 hours for procedures and buffer)
- 6:55–9:20: Shanghai to Beijing (SHA→PEK, 2 hours and 25 minutes)
- 10:15–11:30: Drive from PEK to Mutianyu Great Wall (allows extra time if you need to collect your luggage after landing)
- 11:30–15:30: Mutianyu visit (includes transfer time and lunch break)
- 15:30–16:45: Back to PEK (allows 1–2 hours for procedures and buffer)
- 18:00–20:20: Beijing to Shanghai (PEK→SHA, 2 hours and 20 minutes)
Three rules hold this together.
Land at Beijing Capital (PEK), not Daxing (PKX). Capital Airport (PEK) is 70 km from Mutianyu, a 1 to 1.5-hour drive. Daxing Airport (PKX) sits south of the city, and a return transfer from PKX to Mutianyu takes 4 to 5 hours of driving instead of two and a half.
Hand luggage only. A checked bag costs 30 to 40 minutes at each end, and this day has none to spare.
Book the return no earlier than 18:00, and better take a 19:00 or later flight if one exists. Beijing's afternoon traffic is the only variable here that genuinely breaks the plan.
Personally, we would not book a same-day return with a tightly timed evening flight. Beijing traffic and flight delays can turn a comfortable-looking itinerary into a stressful one.
For a round-trip day trip with such a tight schedule, booking a taxi or a private car for transfers is essential. If you don't want to work out the transfer yourself, we can arrange a private car and English-speaking guide to meet you at the airport and take you directly to Mutianyu.
Choose the High-Speed Train if You Can Stay One Night in Beijing
Since the fastest high-speed train takes about 4½ hours from Shanghai to Beijing, it is more comfortable for a 2-day trip and worse for a same-day Great Wall trip.
If you have other plans in Beijing, taking the high-speed train can save you the time spent waiting for flights and collecting luggage, allowing for a more relaxed itinerary.
However, we do not recommend making a round trip from Shanghai solely to visit the Great Wall for three hours—after all, the one-way journey alone takes 4½ hours.
How to Get from Beijing to Mutianyu Great Wall
A private car with a driver is the only transfer option that works for a one-day itinerary, as the vehicle will wait for you at the Great Wall scenic area. Taxis and ride-hailing are workable for the outbound leg but unreliable for the return, since driver availability at Mutianyu is variable.

Public transport is possible, but it involves multiple changes and takes hours longer, so you don't need to travel into central Beijing from the airport to find a further transfer.
If I'm traveling a long way from Shanghai specifically to see the Great Wall, I would spend the extra money on a direct transfer instead. It is about protecting the limited sightseeing time.
What If You Have More Than One Day: A Realistic 2-Day Shanghai to Great Wall Itinerary
Day 1: Shanghai → Beijing → Mutianyu
- Early morning: Take a flight or early high-speed train from Shanghai.
- Late morning: Meet your driver in Beijing and go directly to Mutianyu.
- Around noon: Have lunch near the Great Wall.
- Afternoon: Spend about 3 hours at Mutianyu.
- Late afternoon: Drive back to Central Beijing.
Take the cable car or another uphill option if you don't want to spend your energy climbing from the bottom. Once you're on the Wall, walk between the watchtowers at your own pace.
Stay around Wangfujing, the Forbidden City, or another central area so you can start sightseeing the next morning easily.
Day 2: Add Beijing Instead of Rushing Back to Shanghai
Don't make the mistake of spending the entire second day getting back to Shanghai.
Use it for one or two Beijing highlights.
- Morning: Tian'anmen Square and Forbidden City
- Afternoon: Temple of Heaven or another central Beijing attraction
- Evening: Take a high-speed train back to Shanghai.
This makes the long journey from Shanghai much more worthwhile.
Having more than 2 days? You can slow down and include more Beijing experiences like the Summer Palace and hutongs without turning the trip into a race.
If your wider China itinerary already includes Beijing, do not make a separate Shanghai → Beijing → Shanghai trip just for the Great Wall. Put Mutianyu into your Beijing stay instead, which is usually the cleaner itinerary.
The Great Wall itself is not the difficult part of this trip. The difficult part is connecting Shanghai, Beijing, the mountain area around Mutianyu, and your return journey without wasting half a day in transit. That's where your transport choice makes the biggest difference.
