Wudang Mountains - Taoism, Wellness and Kung Fu Journey

Written by Lyris Lu Updated Sep. 7, 2026

If your China itinerary already includes Beijing and Xi'an for history, and mountains like Zhangjiajie or Huangshan for dramatic scenery, is Wudang Mountain still worth your time?

Our answer is yes, if you are interested in Taoist culture. While China has many Taoist mountains, Wudang stands out because you can experience a rare combination of living Taoist traditions here. Learn Tai Chi, martial arts, herbal medicine, wellness philosophy, and feel Taoist arts.

How long to stay depends on how deeply you want to experience it: 2 days for a simple Taoist feel and hiking, 5-7 days for both wellness and sightseeing, or focus on Kung Fu training.

A One-Day Visit Feels Rushed: Spend at Least 2 Days

Can you visit Wudang in one day? Technically yes, but we don't recommend it unless you're willing to take the cable car up and down, visit only Golden Summit and Taizipo, and skip Nanyan area.

The mountain is more spread out than many first-time visitors expect: transfers between Nanyan and Qiongtai take 2h, and exploring the Nanyan hiking route alone can take 3-5 h.

So, to fully explore Wudang's main highlights at a comfortable pace, you'll need at least 2 days.

  • Day 1: Taizipo→Xiaoyao Valley→Purple Heaven Palace→Nanyan (stay overnight here)
  • Day 2: Hike to Golden Summit→Take cable car down→Visit Qiongtai→departure

5 Days is the Ideal Pace for Wellness and Mountain Life

If you want to balance two sides of Wudang, stay 5 days here or longer. Half your time is spent hiking and visiting temples, while the other half is dedicated to Taoist wellness activities.

  • Day 1-Wudang arrival, stay overnight in the Qiongtai Area
  • Day 2-Qiongtai Wellness Day: practice Qigong, vegetarian meal, Taoist scripture copying, incense making, and stargazing outdoors
  • Day 3-Qiongtai: Qigong practice, cable car to Golden Summit, hike back to Qiongtai
  • Day 4-Nanyan: visit Taizipo, Purple Heaven Palace, Nanyan Palace, down the mountain
  • Day 5-At the mountain foot, identify medicinal herbs and make a sachet, departure

Especially when you want a relaxed pace, this itinerary with hiking down from Qiongtai can save your energy while you'll also enjoy the hiking fun and mountain scenery.

And you'll stay in Qiongtai for 3 nights; no need to change your hotel on the mountain and worry about carrying your luggage between different areas.

If you prefer hiking via the Ming or Qing Trail, we can also customize a route starting from Nanyan. And the driver will transfer your luggage to Qiongtai by private vehicle when you are hiking.

If you are mainly interested in martial arts, we can also arrange a Kung Fu-focused trip, where you stay at a martial arts school and train with instructors throughout your stay.

Each Temple Serves A Different Purpose on Wudang

Do I need to visit all the temples? Are they all the same?

For first-time visitors, Golden Summit and Taizipo are the must-sees for architecture and iconic views, and you can choose the other to visit based on your interests.

purple palace
Purple Heaven Palace
  • Golden Summit: for safety, wealth, and your parents’ health. See the 600-year-old eternal lamp, golden brick on the pillar, and 500-million-year-old trilobite fossil base.
  • Taizipo: for study and academic success. You can see the photogenic winding red walls.
  • Purple Heaven Palace: for Love and children. It's where female Taoist priests cultivate.
  • Qiongtai Zhongguan: for career success. It's where male Taoist priests cultivate.
  • Nanyan Palace: for longevity and health. You can see an incense burner set over the cliff.

That's a normal visitor's way to visit Wudang's temples. But you can try to follow the Taoist priests' daily rhythms and traditions, to see what happens inside these temples every day.

Watch morning and evening rituals with Taoist music

Qiongtai Middle Temple
The morning ritual in Qiongtai

Go to Purple Heaven Palace at 7:25 am or 16:50 pm, or Qiongtai at 8:30 am or 16:00 pm.

Standing outside the ancient temple hall quietly, you'll witness Taoist priests in yellow robes chanting scriptures, and hear the sacred echo of bells, wooden fish, drums, and cymbals.

Share a vegetarian meal in the temple's dining hall

The dining halls at Golden Summit and Purple Heaven Palace are open to visitors. But we would rather have a Taoist priest accompany you to the Qiongtai Canteen, which is not open to the public. You'll sit and eat at the table with other Taoist priests and away from the crowds.

Join a one-day temple volunteer experience

Changing into Taoist clothes, you'll learn incense rituals, help prepare the meals and sweep, recite Tao Te Ching, and more, experiencing what daily life is like in the temple.

Wudang's Natural Scenery Is Along the Hiking Trails

At temples, you'll mainly see buildings, while Golden Summit is rocky. So only on the hiking trails, you can embrace Wudang's mountain landscapes with forests, shaded paths and streams.

We've hiked all three trails. Ming or Qing Trail is better for climbing up, as you'll get some flat and downhill sections to walk. But on Qiongtai Trail, you almost keep climbing all the way.

Mingshendao Trail
Walk the 600-year-old Ming Ancient Trail
Route Time Highlights Challenges Best for
Ming Trail 3h The most rewarding route, with 5+ sky-ladder paths, four Heavenly Gates, and an ancient bridge Physically demanding, with many steep steps If you regularly hike or enjoy mountain climbing.
Qing Trail 2h The easiest route, with only one sky-ladder path Less varied scenery, mainly forests Seniors, kids, or if you have limited physical strength
Qiongtai Trail 2h The quietest route, with dramatic "thin strip of sky" More vertical climbing If you prefer quietness away from crowds

Before reaching Ming and Qing Trail, you need to hike 1h first from Nanyan to the trail junction, so allow half a day for the entire route (around 3–5 hours in total).

There are many stops along the trails. You can buy water, fruit, snacks, coffee, and even alcohol.

So don't carry a heavy backpack. Just bring your trekking poles and comfortable sneakers.

Experience Taoist Wellness Through Kung Fu, Herbal Medicine and Traditional Art

The deeper value of a Wudang trip is not just what you see here.

You can experience Taoist approaches to caring for the body and calming the mind. Practices that can also become part of your daily life long after you leave Wudang.

Balance Your Body Through Tai Chi and Qigong

Wudang has many Tai Chi inheritors, and over 30 martial arts schools are based here. So, you can learn the authentic Taoist martial arts here.

Through slow movements, controlled breathing, and mindful practice, you’ll learn how Taoist martial arts help cultivate your balance and body.

The most well-known practices include Tai Chi, Qionggong like Baduanjin. You can also learn weapons like the sword, fan, spear, and horsetail whisk. There are two training ways:

Train in a martial arts academy: more immersive

Wudang Mountain
Train at a Tai Chi Academy

You'll live, eat, and train alongside instructors and other students, following a structured daily schedule. It's best if you want to experience the lifestyle of a kung fu student or want a 5+ day intensive training.

Stay at a hotel with private martial arts lessons: more flexible

Qiongtai Middle Temple

You enjoy comfortable accommodation while also following the Kung Fu lessons separately based on your travel plans. It's ideal if you want to combine Wudang sightseeing with martial arts training.

Whether you prefer staying on the mountain for beautiful scenery or at the foot of the mountain for more convenience, we can help you find the right school or hotel based on your schedule and travel preferences.

Nourish Your Body Through Herbal Medicine and Cuisine

Chinese Herbal Identification experience
Identify the herbal medicines in Wudang

You'll follow a Taoist herbalist into the mountains to identify common medicinal plants, such as Radix zanthoxyli, and learn their properties, uses, and the best seasons for harvesting.

Then pick different dried herbs, grind and sew to create your own herbal sachet. You'll know different herbs are traditionally used for purposes such as relaxation and calming the mind.

And when you enjoy the herbal cuisine, you'll learn how different ingredients are traditionally chosen based on their properties and your body's needs, not just because they're considered "healthy".

Calm Your Mind Through Taoist Arts

Taoist Wellness Retreat
We participated in a Taoist Elegant Gathering

Learn Guqin, practice incense seal making, and copy Taoist scripture calligraphy. These activities need patience and focus and will gradually quiet your mind.

We can arrange a private Taoist elegant gathering for you. You sit quietly and enjoy Tai Chi and sword performance, drink tea, with music and incense burning together.

And you can chat with the masters next to you, hearing their stories of Taoist cultivation.

Or visit Wudang Taoist Academy to see how Taoism is passed down to the next generation. You'll see a totally different college life here: scripture-filled libraries, Tai Chi training grounds, and classrooms where students study Taoist music and philosophy.

Getting to Wudang is Easy from Xi'an or Wuhan

Wudang Mountain is located in Shiyan, Hubei Province. However, it takes you only about 1h by bullet train from Xi'an and 2h from Wuhan.

You can reach there by bullet train via Shiyan Station or the closer Wudangshan West Station.

How to Get to Wudang Mountain

For a smoother journey, you can also arrange a private tour with airport or train station transfers included.

This is especially convenient if you plan to explore attractions beyond the mountain, such as Taiji Lake, Wudang Taoist Academy, or the Wudang Dream Theater. A private car saves you the hassle of arranging taxis or waiting for public transport.

Stay on the Mountain to Save 2h Transfer Time

Wudang Mountain's shuttle bus takes around 1h one way. Staying on the mountain can save you time to and from the tourist center(2h), so you'll have more time to visit instead of transferring.

Nanyan and Qiongtai are the two best areas to stay, with bus stops, a small shopping street, and temples all nearby.

Stay in Nanyan for Hiking and Sunrise

To hike through the Ming or Qing trail, you need to start from Nanyan. You can also enjoy sunrise at your hotel here, without starting at 5 am to climb to Golden Summit.

Recommend hotels like Taihe Ziyin and Shangshan Xiuxing (CNY 500+).

Stay on Qiongtai for convenient cable car access

The cable car station is located here. You can take 8 am cable car before the crowds arrive.

However, it has fewer restaurants and shops than Nanyan. If you need to buy snacks or daily necessities, do it before 8:30 pm, as many stores close early.

You can consider Yunwai Mountain Residence (CNY 500+), the best hotel in Qiongtai.

When to Stay at the Foot of the Mountain?

It's more comfortable if you want to continue your wellness and Kung Fu trip after exploring the mountain. You'll enjoy convenient town life with more dining options.

Hotels of a similar standard are usually about CNY 200 cheaper than those on the mountain, such as Yuanhe Meisu (CNY 350+).

Best Time for Wudang: Apr-May and Sep-Early Nov

  • Apr-May: warm, mountains return green, shoulder season with fewer crowds
  • Sep-Early Nov: cool, you avoid summer peak, and can catch autumn leaves from late Oct.

In these months, the comfortable weather and refreshing mountain views are pleasant for hiking and Taoist wellness experiences. And you can save around 100-300 CNY on hotels or flights.

January Travel in Wudang

  • Temperature:-3-11℃/27-52℉
  • Snow: 3-6 days (2-40 mm)
  • Sunny: 8-15 days

During snowfall, Golden Summit and Qiongtai are great for photos. You'll see the snow-covered mountains, rime forests, and red-walled temples create a stunning contrast.

You can slow down in a warm room with a cup of hot tea, practice meditation, and watch the snow fall outside your window. Feel a deep connection between the quiet mountains and your inner peace.

Watch out:

  • Mountain paths can become icy, so wear shoes with good grip.
  • Heavy snow may stop mountain entry, shuttle bus, and cable car running for 1-2 days.

Taoist Etiquette and Taboos You Should Know Before Visiting Wudang

1. Use Fist-and-Palm Salute When Praying or Greeting

Wuxian Temple on Tianma Peak
Fist and palm salute

Many visitors use the Buddhist palms-together gesture, but Taoism has its own etiquette.

When praying: Place your left hand over your right fist, with your left thumb inserted into the circle formed by your right thumb and index finger.

When offering incense: Insert incense in order: middle, right, then left. Keep the incense straight and at the same height. If the incense catches fire, gently shake it out instead of blowing on it.

2. Respect Temple Spaces and Sacred Objects

  • Avoid touching statues or ritual objects.
  • Do not take photos directly of statues unless permitted.
  • Do not step on temple thresholds; always step over them.
