Shapowei is not a must-visit spot, but its colorful streets, old fishing boats, and modern Twin Towers backdrop make it look very appealing on social media, especially for younger travelers.
It's not worth visiting as a standalone attractions just to take photos and check off. You may find it smaller than expected, and you can finish walking around in just 20-30 minutes, then wonder where to go next. However, Shapowei works better as a stop to add to a relaxing Xiamen city walk.
Take your time exploring the creative shops, enjoy a cup of coffee, and see how an old fishing harbor has transformed into a creative neighborhood. Then, combined with nearby Xiamen University, Nanpituo Temple, Cat Streets or Baicheng Beach, you can naturally fit Shapowei into your Xiamen itinerary without detour, to experience different cityscape in a half day.
Should You Visit Shapowei During Daytime or Sunset
Shapowei feels very different depending on when you visit.
When's the Quiet Moment? 10 am - 4 pm
If you prefer a more relaxed experience, daytime is the best choice.
During this time, Shapowei is relatively quiet, but most shops are already open. You can explore the area without the crowds, take photos and food without waiting in line.
When's Best for Sunset and Night Views? After 5 pm
After 5:00 pm, Shapowei starts to become much busier. The advantage is that the atmosphere is more lively. During sunset, the colorful shops and fishing boats look more beautiful under the warm golden light, and you can stay until the Twin Towers light up at night.
However, The streets become crowded. And due to the traffic restrictions, vehicles are not able to enter from 4 pm on weekends and holidays (7 pm on weekdays). You'll find it harder to get a taxi to arrive at or leave Shapowei.
Evening visits work best if you are staying nearby, such as at Conrad Xiamen. You can simply walk 7-8 minutes to Shapowei, without worrying about transportation.
How Much Time Do You Need in Shapowei?
Shapowei is a small area. You mostly spend your time strolling around the Art West Zone, the streets along the harbor, and the old arcade-style food streets here.
Depending on your travel style, you can spend anywhere from 20 minutes to 2h here.
30min Visit for Iconic Photo Spots
If you mainly want to capture the most recognizable Shapowei views, 30 minutes is enough.
Simply walk along the harbor, explore the Art West Zone, and stop whenever you find interesting storefronts, colorful walls, or creative designs. Don't miss these iconic photo spots:
1. Fishing boats and the harbor view
Stand near the waterfront in the Art West Zone, where you can capture the most recognizable Shapowei scene: fishing boats on the water, colorful shops, old residential buildings, and the harbor all in one frame.
2. Rainbow Wall
Follow the stairs to the rooftop area inside the Art West Zone. The colorful wall works well as a background for your portrait photos. Try to visit before 4:00 pm, as it becomes much busier later in the afternoon and you may need to wait.
3. Twin Towers
You will easily notice a graffiti wall near a soufflé shop. Walk into the small alley beside it and follow the waterfront path. When you turn back, the Twin Towers rise dramatically above you, creating one of the most recognizable Shapowei views.
Here you can also order a dessert or drink, sit by the waterfront, and watch the fishing boats and Twin Towers.
1-2h Slow Walk for Shops, Food and Fishing Port Culture
If you have more time, slow down your pace and explore beyond the photo spots. You can browse creative shops, look for small souvenirs, enjoy local snacks or afternoon tea, and discover the cultural side of Shapowei hidden beneath its trendy appearance.
In the Art West Zone, you will find many small shops and market stalls selling handmade jewelry, bracelets, retro toys, creative souvenirs, seashell decorations, and other small items with local or artistic designs.
While in the arcade street areas, you can freely wander around and see what delicious food suits your taste. Such as local snacks like seafood casserole porridge, oyster omelette, four-fruit sweet soups, or treats like taiyaki, soufflés and burgers.
To be honest, Shapowei is not the best place to search for Xiamen's most authentic food, but it is a convenient stop for lunch, snacks, or an afternoon break during your sightseeing.
And one thing I only discovered after visiting Shapowei twice is the Xiagang Longzhu Temple and Marine Culture Exhibition Hall by the harbor. Many visitors would miss these spots.
Inside, you can learn about Xiamen's long-standing fishing traditions, including the Wangchuan (King Boat) Festival. You can also see a beautifully crafted King Boat featuring traditional Minnan craftsmanship such as wood carving, painting, and paper art.
This may give you a different perspective: beneath the trendy shops, Shapowei still keeps traces of its fishing village past.
Half-day Walk: Combine Shapowei with Nearby Attractions
Shapowei → Cat Street → Nanputuo Temple → Xiamen University → Baicheng Beach for sunset
This relaxing route allows you to experience several different sides of Xiamen without backtracking, from temples and university life to a historic fishing harbor and the seaside.
Stop 1: Shapowei (1h)
Start your walk in Shapowei, where you can photograph the colorful streets, browse creative shops, and enjoy your lunch here.
Stop 2: Ding'aozai Cat Street (10min)
When you walk through this small community, the lanterns, colorful flags, street lamps over your head, or the cafes, snack shops, murals and sculptures you see, all feature lovely cat elements.
Treat it as a fun walk-through stop rather than a destination that requires a separate visit.
Stop 3: Nanputuo Temple (30min)
If you come in June and July, before entering the temple, you'll embrace it's lotus pond from outside first. From here, you can capture a beautiful view combining lotus flowers, temple roofs, and the mountains behind. This view is better than what you can admire from inside.
Since it's an afternoon walking route, you also avoid the morning crowds, as many locals and visitors come in the morning for worship. You can enjoy the peaceful vibe in the afternoon.
Stop 4: Xiamen University (1h)
Xiamen University has become a popular stop for visitors because of its beautiful campus and architecture. Inside, you can walk through the famous Jiageng-style buildings, see black swans swimming in the lakes, and explore the youthful graffiti tunnel.
Just note that you need a reservation 3 days in advance through their official WeChat accounts.
Stop 5: Baicheng Beach (30min-1h)
Baicheng Beach is best visited around sunset, when you can capture the beautiful combination of the sunset over the sea and the Twin Towers in the background.
However, the beach itself can get very crowded at this time. Instead of sitting on the sand, I recommend finding a nearby seaside restaurant or bar, where you can enjoy dinner or a drink while waiting for the sunset and the Twin Towers to light up.
