Is June a Good Time to Visit Yunnan?
The answer depends on how you look at it.
From a crowd perspective, June is actually a great choice. It's noticeably quieter than the peak summer months of July and August, which means a more relaxed travel experience.
From a weather perspective, it's more of a mixed picture. Temperatures are generally comfortable—Yunnan doesn't get extremely hot, and the highland areas are still great for escaping the heat.
However, June also marks the start of the rainy season, which can affect your experience. Mountain views may be hidden by clouds, paths can be slippery, and outdoor activities like hiking or cycling may not always be ideal. (Yunnan is at its most beautiful on clear days.)
So if you're planning to visit during this time, it's important to keep your expectations flexible. Make sure to factor in the weather when planning your itinerary and prepare a few backup options.
That said, if June–August is your only travel window, June is actually the most recommended of the three. But if you have more flexibility, we would suggest choosing another time of year.
Is the Rain Manageable in June?
We have to be honest—rain in Yunnan during June can be quite unpredictable. Weather forecasts often show rain for many days, but in reality, conditions can change quickly. A day that looks rainy on the forecast may turn out to be partly sunny, and vice versa.
Will it rain all day? More often, you'll get periods of rain mixed with cloudy or even clear intervals. There can be a few consecutive rainy days, but there are also days when the weather improves unexpectedly.
So if you're planning to visit Yunnan in June, it's best to treat the forecast as a reference rather than a certainty. To be honest, a trip during this time does depend a bit on luck.

In June, the destinations you visit in Yunnan don't change that much—but how you plan your trip does. A few small adjustments can make a big difference during the rainy season.
1. Add Shangri-La to Your June Itinerary.
We recommend adding Shangri-La to your June itinerary because it's matsutake mushroom season—when you can head into the forests like a local "hunter" and taste it at its freshest.
We would take you into untouched pine forests that are not open to the public. There you can become a "matsutake hunter." It's a fun adventure for kids and a great way to learn about this fascinating ingredient—one that spends years growing underground, only to emerge for a few short days.

Kunming, Dali, and Lijiang are still must-visit destinations. Here are a few tips to help you plan around the rain.
In Kunming, visiting the Stone Forest is mostly outdoors, so it's helpful to prepare shoe covers and a raincoat—these are often more practical than umbrellas in the rain.

For visiting Erhai Lake in Dali, we suggest exploring by car rather than cycling. This way, you can stop anytime along the way—and if it rains, you can easily move to a lakeside café or continue sightseeing comfortably.
In Lijiang, if you enjoy photography, consider visiting Tinghua Valley. In June, flowers are in full bloom, and on sunny days, the scenery is especially photogenic.
As for Jade Dragon Snow Mountain, there is less snow at the summit compared to winter, so it may not look as dramatic. However, areas like Spruce Meadow and Blue Moon Valley are still worth visiting.

If it starts raining, you can always stop at a café or tea shop in an old town and take a break for an hour or two. In a cozy café, with rain tapping on the window, soft lighting, and the aroma of coffee in the air, it becomes a quiet, intimate moment to share with your loved ones.
3. What to Avoid
Outdoor trekking routes such as Tiger Leaping Gorge and Yubeng are not recommended during this time. Rain can make the trails slippery and unsafe, and you may need to wait for clear weather, which can easily affect your overall travel plan.
What to Wear in June in Yunnan
In Kunming, Dali, and Lijiang, lightweight clothes, such as T-shirts, trousers, and long dresses, are ideal for daytime wear, along with sun-protective clothing and comfortable shoes, while a thin coat is recommended for the nights. A waterproof jacket is needed while visiting the snow mountains.
In Shangri-La, the cooler weather makes long sleeves and hoodies suitable for the daytime. For mornings, evenings, and rainy periods, winter jackets, sweaters, and hats are recommended.
In Xishuangbanna, lightweight summer clothing, such as T-shirts and skirts, are ideal for wearing all day. Long, thin trousers are also recommended to protect against mosquitoes.
