What Are Some Recommended Places in Yunnan in October?
1. Dali
Xizhou rice paddies and small trainIn Xizhou, the rice fields turn golden during the harvest season, stretching endlessly under a bright blue sky, with a small train running through them. You can walk into the fields, or hop on the train for a slow ride. The scene feels almost like an animation and is very relaxing and photogenic.

This alone makes it a great place for photos. On clear days, you might also capture the snow-capped Jade Dragon Snow Mountain in the background.
At Lugu Lake, Gesang flowers bloom around Daluoshui Pier, creating one of the most beautiful seasonal views. Walking along the pier, you are surrounded by bright flowers, golden grasslands, reeds, and clear lake water. You can also visit Mosuo villages to learn about their matriarchal culture.

October is when Shangri-La reveals its most striking highland scenery, with clear skies, strong sunlight, and expansive plateau views spanning mountains and valleys.
In Pudacuo National Park, autumn colors blanket forests and lakes. Yellow and green spread across the landscape, while yaks graze in open meadows. Walking through the park, the scenery around you feels calm, layered, and almost unreal in its quiet beauty.

4. Xishuangbanna & Pu'er
October brings warm and relatively stable weather to southern Yunnan, making it a comfortable time to explore a completely different side of the region. Compared with northern Yunnan, the landscape feels much more tropical, lush, and vibrant.
At Jingmai Mountain, a sea of clouds appears almost daily in October. Imagine staying in a room with a view or standing on a viewpoint, watching clouds roll over ancient tea villages. The quiet, misty landscape feels far removed from city life.
Sea of clouds over Jingmai MountainOctober is also a festive time here, with the Brown ethnic Ka Men Festival lasting two days. It celebrates the harvest and a return to normal life. If you visit then, you can join singing and dancing, watch fireworks, and experience a lively local celebration.
In Xishuangbanna, you can experience Dai culture throughout the day. Visit Manting Park and local villages to see traditional architecture and daily life, then head to the Starlight Night Market in the evening for Dai food, music, and vibrant night views, making it easy to fill both day and night.

What to Pack
Temperatures can vary quite a bit throughout the day in October. It may feel warm under the sun, but mornings and evenings are cooler, and it can also feel cooler when it rains. Dressing in layers will help you stay comfortable.
For Kunming, Dali, and Lijiang, bring a sweater, long pants, and a light jacket for early mornings, evenings, and when it rains. During the day, it is often warm enough for lighter outfits, and you can still wear dresses for photos.
For Shangri-La, you will need warmer clothing. A thicker coat or a windproof jacket with layers underneath works best, along with wind-resistant pants. A scarf and hat are also useful. If you plan to visit Meili Snow Mountain, a down jacket is recommended.
For Xishuangbanna and Pu'er, focus on light and breathable clothing. T-shirts, light pants, or long skirts are usually all you need for the warm, tropical weather.
As Yunnan sits on a high plateau, the sunlight can be strong and easy to underestimate. Sunscreen, sunglasses, and a sun hat are essential. A compact umbrella is also useful for occasional showers.
Crowds and Costs
Crowds: The first week of October is China's Golden Week, a most-busy travel time when popular spots like Lijiang and Dali get really crowded. But don't worry — once Golden Week is over, the crowds thin out a lot.
Costs: Prices tend to surge during Golden Week, so if you've decided to visit during this time, booking your accommodation and flights 2-3 months in advance would save you some money, although prices would still be high.
If your schedule is flexible, visiting after the National Day holiday is recommended. Later in October could be better still. The weather remains pleasant and you would enjoy the advantages of fewer tourists and more affordable prices.
Advice on Traveling in Yunnan during China's National Day Holiday
As a popular tourist destination, Yunnan is bound to attract large crowds during the National Day holiday (it is usually October 1–7).
If you plan to travel during this time, it's important to be prepared for the crowds.
One major challenge with many tourists is the long lines at attractions. For example, the cable car to the Glacier Park on Jade Dragon Snow Mountain might have a wait time of 1–2 hours!
To manage this, we suggest the following:
1) Start your day early (possibly as early as 6 or 7am).
2) Have a backup plan (such as, instead of Glacier Park, visit Spruce Meadow, as taking the cable car going there has fixed times and doesn't require waiting in line).
3) Adjust your itinerary to visit the most popular spots in the last 4 or 5 days, when the crowds are likely to be smaller.
