Weather: October is one of the best months for a visit. It is when the warm and sunny season starts in Macau and Hong Kong. The monsoon season ends around the middle of October, and from then through December people can expect fine sunny days with low humidity and cool nights. It's ideal weather for tourists.
The average daily high temperature is a warm 27 °C (81 °F). However, on bright sunny days, all the sunlight reflecting off the glass and the hot pavement still often makes it feel hot. The average low temperature is a comfortable 22 °C (72 °F). For those coming from dark and cold northern latitudes, the sunny weather might be a real attraction of going to Macau in the fall.
The month gets about 117 mm of rain, and it rains about 7 days in October. Typhoons are rare, and there is almost no bad weather in this month. A day of strong winds generally marks the end of monsoon season and the start of the good weather. You'll likely feel mild and comfortable most of the time, but the city sometimes gets a lot of smog from the north.
Clothing: Summer clothing is enough during the day. Bring a long-sleeve shirt, long skirt, or pants to stay warm in the evenings, when it rains, or when it is windy. Sunglasses and hats might prove a relief from the bright sun and all the reflecting glass.
Things to Do
People from Chinese Mainland come in large numbers around the October 1st Chinese National Day during which many people are on a week-long holiday and during the Mid-Autumn Festival if it falls in the month. Swimming is not recommended because the water is a bit cool.
The Mid-Autumn Festival: The annual holiday is the second biggest traditional Chinese festival. It usually falls in September, but occasionally the public holiday is in early October. If you are there at this time, you can join the festivities in the shopping streets and city parks.
Moon cakes featuring the fruits and nuts of the season are the favorite festival food. A highlight in the city of Macau is the annual fireworks display. It is a grand spectacle.
Another highlight is the lighting of lanterns. In Macau, the traditional spots for lighting lanterns are the Praia Grande, Black Sand Beach and Cheoc-Van Beach. People leave their lanterns floating on the water and watch them float away.
Go to the Hong Kong Mid-Autumn Fest: Hong Kong is only an hour away by fast ferry, and it is an alternative place to see the festival highlights and enjoy the city's restaurants and shopping.
See the Ruins of St. Paul's Cathedral: This is a historical attraction to see for a quick break and excursion. It is a facade that is 27 meters high and almost 400 years old, and it is what remains of a cathedral. It was built by Japanese craftsmen, and many tourists find it fascinating.
