Chongqing Weather in August: How to Survive the Heat

Written by Lyris Lu Updated Mar. 30, 2026

August is the hottest month in Chongqing. Daytime temperatures usually range from 35–42℃ (95–108℉) with 70%+ humidity. How hot is it? Think the furnace, the sauna room, the sweltering heat that keeps you drinking water but rarely needs a toilet.

  • A hot August day in Chongqing: you wake up to a 30℃ (86℉) morning, step into a 40℃ (104℉) afternoon, and even by 10 pm, it's still around 35℃ (95°F).
  • Rainfall: 4–18 rainy days, varying by year. Frequent short thunderstorms, typically in the evening

Is August a Good Time to Visit Chongqing?

It's not a good idea to come to Chongqing in August due to the crazy heat.

  • Early to mid-August: Hot, and the summer holiday crowds are still around.
  • Late August: Fewer people, but you'll likely face ongoing heat or rainy days.

Cold drinks + spicy Chongqing food in hot weather = not the best combo for your stomach.

Walking under the nearly 40℃ (104℉) heat, adding in the constant up-and-down mountain steps in Chongqing, it can feel like you've put yourself in a steam pot. So think it over.

The Yangtze River will turn yellow after a rainstorm, making the river scenery less stunning during your cruise. Also, it's too hot to enjoy your deck time and excursions.

Do I Have to Give Up Visiting Chongqing in August?

Not at all. It's still doable. For example, arrange more indoor activities, such as Guanyinqiao indoor food street, Ring Mall (indoor rainforest), Three Gorges Museum, and air-raid shelters.

You can also head out to places like Wulong and Pu Hua Dark River to experience a 27℃ (81℉) summer.

So if you want to challenge Chongqing's summer, planning the right activities and itinerary is key. Let's explore some ways to actually enjoy and survive the August heat in Chongqing.

With a private tour, you can travel in an air-conditioned vehicle with a guide, avoiding the heat while moving between attractions at your own pace.

5-Day Chongqing Summer Itinerary (Heat-Smart Plan)

Day 1: Chongqing

  • Morning: Yangtze River Cableway → Longmenhao Old Street → Kuixinglou
  • Afternoon: Ring Mall → Guanyinqiao
  • Evening: Nanshan Tree Viewing Platform → Xiahaoli

Start early and catch the 7:30 am Yangtze River Cableway to avoid queues. Ride from Jiefangbei to the south bank, and you'll arrive right at Longmenhao Old Street.

Both Longmenhao and Kui Xing Lou are pretty exposed with little shade, so going in the morning saves you from taking photos in the 40℃ (104℉) heat later on.

Afternoon is the hottest time of the day, so it's best to hide out in air-conditioned malls.

Ring Mall isn't the kind of mall you usually visit. The rainforest, waterfalls, and floating trees make you feel like you've escaped into a cool green oasis. And, also photogenic enough.

No appetite in the heat? Guanyinqiao's 11,000-sqm indoor food street keeps you cool while you enjoy all kinds of local snacks, like Chongqing Noodles, tofu puddings, shao-mai, and dumplings in soup.

Chongqing often puts on those "anime clouds" and epic sunset skies in summer. Nanshan Tree Viewing platform is best for a full skyline view as the sun sets. You'll catch the transition from daylight → sunset → blue hour → lights turn on

Sunset in ChongqingSunset in Chongqing

In August, the sun sets around 7 pm in Chongqing. Get there about 20 minutes early to grab a good spot. It's easy to reach by car, so no climbing needed, and also ideal for senior travelers.

Xiahaoli is nearby and lights up right around sunset. After watching the sunset, you can stroll there afterward, take photos of the layered stilted buildings with the waterfall, and browse boutique cafes or fun-design stores.

Day 2: Chongqing

  • Morning: Liziba monorail through buildings → Ciqikou Ancient Town
  • Afternoon: Chongqing 1949 Show → Huangjueping Air-raid Shelter
  • Evening: Hongya Cave

In the morning, when the sun is not yet too strong, you'll get better lighting at Liziba for photos with no backlighting.

With plenty of tree shade and softer morning sunlight, Ciqikou Ancient Town is more comfortable for you to explore.

1949 Grand Theater is right next to Ciqikou Ancient Town. You'll enjoy a unique 8D Chongqing-style performance with a 360° rotating stage. As the stage turns, your seat moves together, fully immersed in the wartime story of Chongqing.

When it's 40℃ (104℉) outside, you'll head to a 27℃ (81℉) underground world.

Spend your summer like a local in Huangjueping Air-raid Shelter. Sip tea, paint, play cards, or chat in an air-raid shelter teahouse. Or head to a retro bookstore filled with old books and vintage items. You'll get film-like photos filled with old Chongqing vibe.

If you'd like to add more experiences, such as a Saturday night drone show or a foot massage after a long day of walking, we can also flexibly arrange. Just contact us.

Day 3: Chongqing

  • Morning: Shancheng Alley → Eling Park
  • Afternoon: Journey to the Center of the Earth
  • Evening: Jiefangbei Pedestrian Street

Shancheng Alley and Eling Park are both shady to explore in August. So if you don't want to wake up as early as the past two days, starting at 9 am is totally fine.

Shancheng AlleyShancheng Alley

At Shancheng Alley, you can stop by Linger Sister Dessert Store, my favourite dessert spot in Chongqing.

Order a passion fruit ice jelly or osmanthus fermented rice tofu pudding. Sit back on a bamboo chair, fan in hand, and watch the Yangtze River flow by. It feels like you're stepping into Chongqing's old summer days.

Spend your afternoon on "A Journey to the Earth's Core". This underground cave and river adventure is both cool and fun.

You'll wear a headlamp, hike in the cave, drift along underground streams, and even try water bikes with your kids. The 18℃ (64℉) temperature inside will let you forget you're in the furnace city Chongqing.

Day 4: Wulong Karst Region

  • Morning: Three Natural Bridges
  • Afternoon: Longshuixia Gorge

Three Natural Bridges and Longshuixia stay cool around 25–30℃ (77–86℉) in August.

You'll descend into lush, verdant canyons, marvel at the dramatic sky holes featured in Transformers 4, and feel the cooling mist from cascading waterfalls and dripping rock formations.

Under the shade and near the waterfalls, you can even feel as cool as 20℃ (68℉), very refreshing. Just make sure to wear non-slip shoes, as the paths can be wet and slippery even on dry days.

Day 5: Wulong Karst Region

  • Morning: Fairy Mountain
  • Afternoon: Furong Cave

At Fairy Mountain, you'll step into a cool summer forest meadow around 25℃ (77℉).

Go camping, ride horses, take the red Thomas trains through the waving road. Let your kids run wild on the grass while you relax, stroll with elders, or have a picnic in the meadow. It's a great way to slow down with your family.

Fairy MountainFairy Mountain

Furong Cave is only 16-18℃ (61–64℉) inside, cool to escape the heat, and you'll also admire the amazing limestone waterfalls.

Outside, you can take a boat cruise along the Furong River. The scenery is similar to a Yangtze River cruise, but with clear emerald-green water, unlike the often muddy hues of the Yangtze in August.

What to Wear in August in Chongqing

Shorts, T-shirts, and light skirts are all you really need this month. Don't forget sunscreen, a sun umbrella, and sandals or breathable shoes.

Beyond the burning sun, ground temperatures in Chongqing can reach up to 60℃ (140℉). The roads stay hot and keep giving off heat.

In this case, a sun-protective jacket can stick to your skin and feel really uncomfortable, so a sun umbrella and sunscreen work much better than extra layers or even a hat.

Before your departure, our travel advisor will also remind you of what to pack based on the latest weather conditions.
