Chongqing Weather in May: Travel and Clothing Tips

Written by Lyris Lu Updated Feb. 24, 2026

May is one of the best times to visit Chongqing. It's quite warm, with clearer skies and less common fog, so you'll enjoy more comfortable weather with clear views.

May also falls in the shoulder season. You'll see lighter crowds and enjoy reasonable prices. But avoid the peak time May Day (1-5).

Weather, Temperature, and Clothing Tips

May sees more sunlight than early spring in Chongqing. The weather is generally warm and humid, with a clear summer feel. You can already switch to summer clothes.

Is Chongqing Very Hot in May?

Yes, it's a little hot at times, but not the furnace-level heat like summer. Daytime temperatures usually alternate between two patterns, each making up roughly half of the month.

  • Warm spring feel: 22-29℃/72–84℉
  • Early summer feel: 30-35℃/86-95℉

The warm weather is ideal for outdoor visiting, such as Jiefangbei Pedestrian Area, Ciqikou Ancient Town, Dazu Stone Caving, and Yangtze River Cruise for deck time and shore excursions.

Just dress light, like light long sleeves, long skirts, thin trousers, T-shirts, or shorts. If you're coming from Singapore, Malaysia, or Thailand. Just pack what you'd normally wear at home.

It will cool down at night, around 15-22℃ (60-72℉). Pack a thin jacket just in case you feel a bit chilly.

Does Chongqing rain a lot in May?

Rainy days Rainfall Totally Sunny Days

May still sees more rainy and cloudy days in Chongqing. But the good news is that most rain falls at night, or light or moderate showers during the day. So it rarely disrupts your travel plans.

When the forecast shows rain, your day in Chongqing might go something like this:

  • cloudy and warm morning→random showers during the day, bring briefly cool, but wet with some mist → rain stops, a bit muggy → rain again in the evening or at midnight.

Overall, the weather feels brighter. Although fully sunny days aren't that many, you'll still catch some sunshine on cloudy or rainy days, and you won't see heavy fog that blocks your view.

That makes it a great time to see and photograph Chongqing's river scenery and skyscrapers together. At spots like the Yangtze River Cableway, Shancheng Alley, and Eling Park, you'll get much clearer views.

Packing tips:

  • A sun-and-rain umbrella
  • Sunscreen and light sun-protective clothing
  • Non-slip shoes (streets can be wet and puddles are common)

What to Expect in Chongqing's May?

May works well for almost all attractions in Chongqing. But I guess you're also looking for some special seasonal highlights. Here they are.

1. Two Rivers Confluence - Chongqing's "Yuanyang Hotpot"

Starting in May, the Yangtze River begins to turn muddy, while the Jialing River stays clear. At the confluence at Chaotianmen near Raffles City, you can see the two rivers meet in striking contrast.

You'll need a high vantage point to get the better views, for example, when you:

  • Stay in a high-floor hotel (like InterContinental Raffles, Lixury Chongqing)
  • Take a Yangtze River Cruise departing from Chaotianmen Dock
  • Dine at high-rise restaurants in Raffles or along Nanbin Road (across from Chaotianmen)
  • Stand on Changjiahui Viewing Platform

2. Riverbank Park - Closer Views of Hongya Cave

Riverbank Park is the best spot to see Hongya Cave, the river, and the bridge in one frame.

In May, lower water levels expose more of the riverbanks. You'll get closer to Hongya Cave for photos. It's also more spacious to watch the Saturday night drone show, with fewer crowds.

But you need to watch out for loose stones and puddles on the riverbank. Lighting is limited, so if you're with kids or older adults, it's safer to enjoy the view from the riverside walkways with rails.

3. Fairy Mountain in Wulong - Blooming Season

From May through September, Fairy Mountain's grasslands and forests stay lush green. But only in May can you catch the flowering trees.

Where to find the blooms:

  • Horse Ranch Area: pink crabapple blossoms (my top pick)
  • Grassland Area: white crabapple blossoms and pink alpine azaleas

The Horse Ranch wins for photography. You've got more pink flowering trees, cattle and sheep grazing on the meadows, the little sightseeing train passing by, and those wavy roads. Way more photogenic than just grass.

Temperature heads-up: If it rains at Fairy Mountain, temperatures can drop to around 11℃ (52℉) even in May. Bring a slightly thicker layer if you're planning to visit.

Crowds and Cost

Avoid visiting during May Day Holiday (1st-5th). It's one of the most pricey and crowded times. If you're traveling during this period, it's best to book hotels and transport well in advance.

Another option is a private tour. With a local guide planning your route and a private car, getting around is much smoother. You won't need to worry about finding taxis or squeezing onto crowded metro lines.

The good news is that for the rest of May, Chongqing stays in the shoulder season. Hotel rates and airfares return to normal, and crowds and long queues ease off after the holiday.

One thing to note: Hongya Cave and the Yangtze River Cableway don't have a true low season. You'll still run into crowds and queues after May Day, so try to plan your visit on a weekday.
