Chongqing Weather in April: One of the Best Months to Visit

Written by Lyris Lu Updated Apr. 14, 2026

In April, Chongqing is warm around 21-32℃ (70-90℉) in daytime, while cool around 14-18℃ (57-64℉) in mornings and evenings. You'll expect 12-17 rainy days. They're mostly showers, so they won't really affect your plans.

  • Early April: Temperatures may drop to 15–18℃ (59–64℉) during the day, cooler but not cold. These dips usually last just 1–2 days before warming up again.
  • Mid to Late April: more stable weather, with some days reaching 33–35℃ (91–95℉).

Is April a Good Time to Visit Chongqing?

Yes, you'll be visiting one of the best months in Chongqing.

The weather is warm and comfortable, with less fog and moderate humidity (around 50-60% when it's not raining). Your walks along Chongqing's hilly streets and steps will be more ideal.

You'll feel lively with more people on the streets, but not crowded, actually. Both locals and tourists like to go out and explore in this month. However, you can still enjoy reasonable prices.

Although Chongqing is not known as a flower-viewing destination, you can still capture spring blooms along the streets, such as wisteria, yellow trumpet trees, kapok, cherry blossoms, and rapeseed flowers. It adds a more pleasant touch to your visit.

Qingming Festival and the School Spring Break

In 2026, April 4-9 will see a short peak period. The Qingming public holiday overlaps with spring breaks in several Chinese provinces. Chongqing may see more tourists during these days.

If you plan to travel during this window, book your hotel about one month in advance. Prices are still reasonable if you secure them early.

If you'd like a more relaxed way to experience Chongqing in April, a private tour helps you adjust the pace and timing based on weather and crowds. See our Chongqing Tours.

What to Do in Chongqing This April

Take a Spring City Walk in Chongqing

The comfortable spring weather in April is the best time for city walks in Chongqing. Here are a few of my favorite routes.

1. E'ling Park → Eling Testbed 2 → Liziba

Eling Testbed 2Eling Testbed 2

This mostly downhill route is easy for kids and seniors. You'll also experience Chongqing's layered and magical urban space design.

From Eling Park's elevated boardwalk among lush forests, to an old factory turned creative space filled with design shops in Testbed 2, and finally Liziba's iconic light rail running through a residential building. Each stop will show you Chongqing's creativity.

2. Qixinggang for a food and local neighborhoods walk

If you're into food and want a route filled with local vibes, Qixinggang is ideal. There are plenty of street food and family-run restaurants with very authentic flavors in the community.

The colorful, layered walkways and residential buildings also create a strong visual contrast. You may feel like you've stepped back into the tranquil life of old Chongqing 20 years ago.

3. 18 Steps → Jiefangbei → Arhat Temple → Huguang Guild Hall → Bai Xiang Ju

This route shows you Chongqing's "old meets new" side. You'll see different old buildings standing quietly among the modern skyscrapers on your way.

Especially at Bai Xiang Ju, it's not just about looking. You walk through a 24-floor residential maze with no elevators, connected by passages that lead to different "ground levels".

For a moment, you're living like a local. And from a sky corridor, you can also catch a unique view of the Yangtze River Cableway and Huguang Guild Hall in one frame.

4. Hongya Cave→Walk through Qiansimen Bridge→Jiefangbei Pedestrian Street→Deyi World

Hongya CaveHongya Cave

Look for an evening city walk? That is! You'll walk around Jiefangbei, the liveliest area in Chongqing, and feel the most cyberpunk night view of Hongya Cave and Deyi World.

Start your evening with a hotpot dinner near Jiangtan Park, across the river from Hongya Cave. April weather is perfect for an open-air riverside table.

Try to go around 6:30 pm. You can enjoy your meal with the river breeze, and wait for the lights to gradually come on in Hongya Cave (7 pm in April) and the bridge (7:30 pm). Then walk back to Jiefangbei for a cyberpunk walk.

Go to Wulong Karst Region for Mountain Hiking

Wulong is cooler than downtown Chongqing, around 15–23℃ (59–73℉) in April in daytime.

Three Natural Bridges and Longshuixia

The scenery is still green here, but the fog is much less. When you take the revolving sightseeing elevator down, it's usually much clearer to enjoy a bird's-eye view of the valley.

But April sees more cloudy and drizzly days. You'd better wear waterproof shoes and bring a raincoat (better than an umbrella) to deal with the dripping cliffs and slippery ground.

Fairy Mountain

Fairy MountainWhat you'll see at Fairy Mountain in April

It's not fully green yet. The grass is half yellow, half green. Some trees are just starting to bud. You can visit in the late months when the scenery is greener.

Fairy Mountain can still be quite cold in April, with temperatures occasionally dropping to around 10-13℃ (50-55℉), so you still need to bring a jacket.

Take a Yangtze River Cruise at a Cost-Effective Price

Century OasisYangtze River Cruise

As the weather warms up, more sailings start running again. You've got more choices of the ships. And the scenery is pleasant to enjoy with green water.

If you're trying to save a bit, early April is usually cheaper. Prices can be around RMB 200–500 lower than later in the month.

One thing to note: in April, water levels can be low. Large cruise ships may not dock at Chaotianmen Dock for several days. Instead, you'll take a 1-2 hour shuttle to Fengdu for boarding. Don't worry. Transfers are arranged smoothly by the cruise company.

Choose and book your best Yangtze River Cruise ship.

What to Wear in Chongqing in April

During the day, you can go for light layers like a T-shirt with a thin shirt or a light jacket. Thin knit tops, sweatshirts, long sleeves, dresses, and long pants all work well.

Early mornings and evenings can feel cooler, so you'll want to bring a light jacket.

Carry an umbrella or a light raincoat, and wear non-slip shoes to stay comfortable on rainy days.

A pair of light, comfortable walking shoes is also recommended. They help you explore Chongqing's hills and stairs more easily.
