Chongqing Weather in July: How to Beat the Heat & Crowds

Written by Lyris Lu Updated Mar. 23, 2026

July in Chongqing is seriously hot. Outdoors, temperatures often push close to 40℃ (104℉). True to its nickname as one of China's "furnace cities". At this time, you might actually find Singapore or Thailand feeling cooler than Chongqing.

The "good" news? July is one of the hottest months, but not the hottest yet. And you can enjoy more blue skies, which are great for your photo colors.

  • Temperature: Mostly 34–40℃ (93–104℉) during the day, and 25–30℃ (77–86℉) at night
  • Rainfall: Around 10–17 rainy days, usually short thunderstorms. Even on rainy days, temperatures can still stay close to 34℃ (93℉)
  • Humidity: Around 70%. You'll feel like walking in a sauna outdoors

Is July a Good Time to Visit Chongqing?

Of course it's not. Not only is it insanely hot, but you'll also be dealing with summer holiday crowds. For families with kids or the elderly, it's torturous to visit Chongqing in summer.

Moreover, hotel prices can jump 20-50% or more, and after heavy rains, the Yangtze River may turn yellow, not the most photogenic.

That said, I won't tell you not to go. If your travel dates are fixed and you still want to visit, there are still ways to make it more manageable. Not perfect, but definitely more comfortable.

  • Come in early July if you can. It's still hot, but usually around 30–35℃ (86–95℉), compared to the more brutal 38–40℃ (100–104℉) in late July.
  • Plan your day around the heat. Try to finish outdoor sightseeing before 10 am. Keep afternoons for indoor spots, then head out again after 7 pm for night views.
  • Combine some cooler spots. Places like Wulong Karst or underground rivers stay around 20℃ (68℉)+. You can enjoy a refreshing summer adventure with your kids there.
  • Consider a Yangtze River Cruise. You stay in air-conditioned comfort, enjoy views from your balcony and activities on the decks, and avoid the peak heat of the city.
  • Book early. Try to lock in your hotels and tours 1-2 months in advance for better rates.

A private tour also helps. You'll have a guide planning the route and a private car ready, so you can skip the waiting-in-the-sun-for-a-taxi situation.

7 Hotspot Tips to Beat July's Heat and Crowds in Chongqing

You can't skip these spots in Chongqing, but you can do them better in July.

1. Hongya Cave

Hongya CaveHongya Cave, view from Jiangbeizui Park

When it lights up at 8 pm on July nights, this is also when Hongya Cave gets the most crowded. Choose quieter spots so you won't be urged by crowds and can't find good photo positions.

  • × Hongya Cave' ground floor; Qiansimen Bridge; Two Rivers Night Cruise
  • √ Jiangtan Park, Jiangbeizui Jiangtan Park; Hongya Cave Night View Restaurants

Both parks are across the river from Hongya Cave, more spacious, so less crowded.

And you can book a riverside restaurant here in advance, like Shanxing Riverside Cafe or Jinshamen Hotpot. Go around 6:30–7:00 pm, and you can enjoy your meal while waiting for the lights to come on. No rush, no crowds, and more relaxing for the elderly.

2. Liziba Monorail through the Residential Building

You surely don't want to stand in the full sun below the platform, cram in crowds, and hold an umbrella to take photos. Yeah, in July, it's not ideal. Try a different angle and a different time.

Lan Sheng Pavilion: it's shaded and quiet. You'll watch the monorails through the building from above. Just navigate to Datianwan Primary School, and walk 200m left. It's best to go in the mornings, so you're not facing backlight, and can get greater photos.

Evening Visit: Most visitors come in the day. So at night, it's quieter, and you don't have to worry about the burning sun. The passing trains under the light look more cyberpunk.

3. Ciqikou Ancient Town

If you're just here for photos, arrive around 8:30 am. Most shops aren't open yet, the streets are tranquil in shades, and it's not so hot. You can snap shots without crowds.

But if you also want to browse snacks and handmade crafts, try this schedule to combine sightseeing with indoor relief from the heat:

  • 2 pm: Leave Jiefangbei for 1949 Grand Theater (30–40 min drive), next to Ciqikou.
  • 3 pm: Watch the indoor show. The immersive 360° rotating stage show will show you the wartime story of Chongqing. The air conditioner is great to avoid the hottest hours.
  • 4–6 pm: Explore Ciqikou Ancient Town. By this time, crowds have thinned, and the sun is less intense. You can enjoy more comfortable strolling and photos, and the stores are still open.

4. Dazu Rock Carvings

Recommended Route: Drive to Dazu in the late afternoon and have dinner → Night visit to Beishan Rock Carvings → Stay overnight in Dazu District → Early morning visit to Baodingshan → Return to downtown Chongqing (Yuzhong District) around noon.

When you visit Beishan at night, there are fewer people. Under the light, the details like flaming patterns on the Peacock King, or the gentle smile of the Avalokitesvara, you'll even see more clearly than during the day.

Baodingshan is the biggest highlight of Dazu Rock Carvings. Go early in the morning, so you can skip the crowds and queues for the shuttle bus, and not such burning heat.

Tips:

  • Night tours run from 7:30 pm to 11:00 pm in summer, so you have plenty of time to explore.
  • Package tickets for Dazu Rock Carvings are valid for three days. You don't need to buy the ticket again the next day

5. Shancheng Lane

You probably already know that between 8–10 am and after 7 pm, it's less crowded and not as hot. But many activities in Chongqing are also scheduled during these hours, and you only have a few days.

The good news is that most parts of Shancheng Lane are shaded. So you can also visit in the late morning (around 10–12 pm), and stop halfway by Ling'er Jie Snack Shop for a cool break.

Find a window seat, and in the 38°C heat, order a bowl of chill tofu pudding or an iced bayberry drink. As you sit there, looking out at the verdant trees and the Yangtze River, that first sip instantly cools you down. It's a small but perfect break from the heat.

6. Yangtze River Cableway

In July, with clearer days and blue skies, your view over the Yangtze River will be wider. But queues of 1-2 hours can easily put you off. Or after all that waiting, you might just find yourself stuck in the middle of the cabin, seeing... basically nothing. So, you can:

Go for the first ride at 7:30 am. There's little to no queue, and the cabin is less than half full. You can easily find a window position for viewing and taking photos.

Try to board last. That way, you can stand by the door (also transparent). It is still much better than being stuck in the middle with blocked views.

7. Drone Show on Every Saturday Night

Changjiahui is the best viewing spot, But in 30℃ (86℉)+ evenings, you can feel hot and uncomfortable by standing in packed crowds. Obviously, it's not an ideal choice in July. Just try other spots.

Go for a rooftop bar. Spots like Raffles Garden Terrace or WFC Huixianlou let you enjoy a drink while watching the drone show (even if it's from the opposite side).

Head to Jiangtan Park. You'll catch both the drone show and Hongya Cave lighting up at 8 pm.

Book a river-view hotel. You can relax in your room while catching the show. Try hotels in Danzishi (front view), or Raffles City area (opposite view). Call to the hotel while booking to make sure your room actually faces the show.

What to Wear in Chongqing in July

Pack light and breathable. Think T-shirts, tank tops, short sleeves, shorts, skirts, and sandals or breathable sneakers. Since Chongqing is a mountainous city with lots of stairs, comfortable shoes are essential.

Sun protection & cooling essentials: sunscreen, a sun umbrella, cooling patches, and a handheld fan.

Mosquito protection: insect repellent is a must. At night, you may want to wear lightweight long pants to avoid bites.

Chongqing is generally too hot for sun-protective jackets during the day, but it's still worth bringing a light layer for strong indoor air-conditioning (often around 18℃ / 64℉), or for cooler areas like Wulong in the early morning.
