Weather: In March, the snow stops and the heavy monsoon rainy season starts. The average daily high temperature is 6 °C (43 °F), and the average nightly low temperature is -1 °C (30 °F).
The three main peaks are about 1,000 meters above the lower areas, so are about 6 °C (11 °F) colder and get occasional snow in March. You might see the snow on the mountain lacing uniquely shaped trees and rocks.
The average precipitation is 183 mm, and it rains 18 days of the month. In higher altitudes, the wind sometimes blows strongly.
The fantastic "seas of clouds" surround the peaks. But fogs might block the view. The high peaks block off warm and moist air from the sea, producing the cloud banks and rain. If the sun breaks through, the UV index is very high. Stay abreast of the local weather forecast>>
Clothing: Wear an overcoat that you can take off as needed. Your shoes should be comfortable, water resistant, and suitable for mountain climbing. Have rain gear.
Hiking: You can climb the 60,000 steps up to a 1,800+ peak in March amid fresh spring scenery, with less crowding and noise than in the warmer months.
A hike to the top of China's famous, legendary mountain range is moderately strenuous and takes fit hikers two or three hours. You can use a cable car to go to the 1,400m+ (5,000 feet) hotel area.
The Yellow Mountain Hot Springs with healthful 42 °C (108 °F) water is one of the natural wonders.
Wuyuan Village: In March and April, yellow seas of rape flowers nestle this well-preserved village of Anhui architecture. It is about 1½ hours' drive (90 km / 56 mi) southwest of Huangshan.
The annual bike race is through the Yellow Mountain foothills and the streets and alleys of World Heritage villages Hongcun and Xidi. We can modify our Yellow Mountain and Hongcun tour to facilitate you or your group.
At the beginning of the tourist season before the peak season starts in April, hotel rooms and Yellow Mountains flights are moderately priced. Accommodations and train tickets are more readily available too.
