Western China consists of Tibet, Gansu, Xinjiang, Yunnan, and Guizhou, offering diverse landscapes and exotic cultures.
Dominated by sunken basins, rolling plateaus, rainbow-colored mountains, and the highest Himalayan plateaus, remote Western China – with a pure blue sky – is paradise for those who love photography and discovering routes off the beaten path.
With the lowest population density in China, Western China still manages to have 44 ethnic minorities. It's a region that's unlike the rest of China. It's also a good place for curious world wanderers to experience a variety of cultures and lifestyles.

Lhasa with Mr Yak
![]() Our Guide Kelsang (or Mr Yak as he liked to say) met us from the train in Lhasa. The next day we spent relaxing in order to get acclimatised to the altitude.Over the next few days Mr Yak guided us through the monasteries of Lhasa and gave great explanations about Buddhism and the history of Tibet. We were a bit worried about climbing the Potala steps but with his encouragement we made it (without needing the Oxygen that he had brought for us!) . He also brought us to great local restaurants so we got to sample lots of delicious food including the ambience of a Tibetan tea house. We also did a day trip out to Yamdrok Lake and Karola Glacier- the scenery was fantastic. For lunch we enjoyed lunch in a local family home. All round a great sampler of Tibet . more
