Brief History
Around 3,000 years ago, 72 villages near Dongzhai Port were destroyed by an earthquake and sunk to the bottom of the sea. The relics of village courtyards along with many houses have been naturally preserved, and remain as they were prior to the disaster.
Most of the villages sit just 3–4 meters under the surface, whereas Renchun Village, "the world's most mysterious place", sits about 10 meters under the surface. Fishes now swim through the memorial archway like the scene described in the traditional myth, "Dragon Palace."
Highlights
Submarine Villages is a real-life Atlantis. It's famous for its fresh seafood, delectable cuisine and hard-working fishing culture. It's also famous for hosting the world's most sapient adventure seekers: divers can explore a 10 meter trench that leads to even more awe-inspiring ancient wonders of the sea.
One of the most interesting things about the Submarine Villages is how well they have been preserved by nature. Plankton and sedimentary buildup, along with the sea's salt content, has kept these 72 villages fully intact for over 3,000 years!
An Earthquake's Devastating Energy
There's no doubt that a powerful earthquake ripped through the region over 3,000 years ago, killing thousands and laying waste to their villages. But it wasn't just the Earth's plate movement that caused all the damage; the villages sunk into the sea! Scientists and laymen alike can only speculate how horrific the experience must have been; but the beauty of it all lies in Submarine Village's tranquility. It is perhaps the quietest, most intrinsically calm place on planet Earth.
