What are the hotels like on a China Highlights tour? Are they fixed? How do I know I’m getting the best hotel for my requirements?
This article will tell you how we select hotels for you and what you can expect from your accommodation.
It would be a bad experience to try to rest in poor accommodation after a day of sightseeing. That we know. But we go far beyond providing somewhere where you can rest well…
At China Highlights we believe that a hotel is not just for sleeping soundly — it’s an important part of your travel experience.
We require all of our suggested hotels to offer comfortable boarding and warm, high-quality service. Moreover, we search to find hotels that have an individual character and their own stories.
Before we suggest a hotel to you, our professional staff conduct several on-the-spot investigations. Our staff will evaluate the hotel based on a set of rigorous standards, then consider the cost, and finally give it a score.
We only recommend hotels that reach a relatively high score.
Room comfort: decoration, cleanliness, bedding, Wi-Fi, other en suite equipment including curtains, TV, stationery, lighting, full-length mirror, bathtub, shower, toilet, towels, shampoo, hair dryer, etc.
Breakfast: cleanliness of the dining hall, food offered (for example, is there a Western-style meal or a buffet, including coffee, milk, and bread?)
Location: a secure environment, transportation (access to public transportation or convenient for a taxi), restaurants or markets nearby, etc.
Other facilities: swimming pool, fitness center, children’s center, a spa, etc.
Check in/out: Are there porters or doormen to assist with the baggage handling? Will there be long queues? Do the staff speak good English?
Catering services: Do the staff offer sincere, careful, and thoughtful services? Does the buffet offer plenty of food choices? Is the à la carte food served within 10 minutes? Does the hotel offer lunch or dinner?
Room services: Does a member of staff escort the customer to his/her room and explain the room’s facilities? Is there a nightly turndown service? Are any issues dealt with quickly?
We hope that, where possible, your hotel can be a part of your China journey of discovery, and the hotel itself is a memorable experience. For this, we assess the design and character of each hotel.
We focus on the design and stories behind the hotels. Some hotels blend the city culture and local elements in the design, such as the Great Wall theme in Beijing hotels, panda-themed hotels in Chengdu, or historical themes in Xi’an hotels.
Some hotels have interesting stories to tell, such as stories about the hotel’s construction, it’s original use, or the founder.
Alila Yangshuo (阿丽拉阳朔糖舍) is one of our recommended hotels in Guilin. It used to be a sugar factory in the 1960s and was reconstructed into a hotel.
Designed by famous artists, the hotel combines history and modernity. There, you can have a meal in the restaurant that used to be the refinery, have a drink in the bar that used to be the squeezing workshop, enjoy an adventure to the old factory, visit the aged sugar making machines, and see the faded photos.
The hotel itself is an attraction, which takes you back to the old days when sugar was produced from locally-grown sugarcane in Yangshuo.
The cost is an important issue when we recommend hotels for you.
First we select hotels with the best facilities and services available in the area, then we have developed long-term cooperation with many of these hotels to get favorable prices.
This ensures every cent of your expenditure counts during your stay in the accommodation.
The purpose of all our efforts is to offer you an exceptional accommodation experience. However, typical travel services in China don’t offer such good hotels, especially for traditional large group tours, for which economy is the No. 1 goal.
This table shows the differences.
|Subject||Group Tours||China Highlights Private Tours|
|Investigation||Generally found online and evaluated via customers’ comments. Patchy or no on-site investigation.||All hotels recommended to our customers must have been thoroughly investigated on-site by our staff members.|
|Standard||The standard varies depending on the investigator. There is no set standard to adhere to.||We will investigate and evaluate a hotel according to a complete and formulated standard, based on two decades of customer satisfaction feedback.|
|Price||Tend to choose hotels that offer cheaper prices.||We choose hotels based on their cost-effectiveness and offer hotels in all price ranges.|
|Character||The only considerations are the price, location, and service.||As well as our hotel standards above, we are also concerned about hotel design and style. Hotels with character are given priority in our suggestions — those with elements of the local culture, scenery, architecture, history, or with some good stories to tell.|
