Smoking is prohibited on all Chinese High-speed trains (G, D, C types train) now. Most Chinese normal-speed trains (Z, T, or K types train) offer smoking area in the spaces between carriages still. You are allowed to smoke on the open parts of the platforms. Below are three important facts you should know for smoke on Chinese trains.
If you are travelling long journey with the Chinese trains, and you really need to smoke, you can get off the train and have a smoke on the open platform for a little while when it stops. However, the stopover time at some stations is 2-3 minutes only. If so, the train staffs on the platform will urge you back to the train at once. Therefore it is smart to check the stopover time of each station in advance, and then decide when to have a smoke during the long trip. What’s more, you’d better to stay close to your carriage exit so that you can back to the train again in time.
If you book your train tickets with Chinese Highlights(https://www.Chinesehighlights.com/Chinese-trains/), you can check the stopover time with our trip advisor.
China's high-speed rail networks all prohibit smoking, but the ban does not apply to normal-speed trains. Smoking is ban in the carriages on normal-speed trains. It is allowed only in designated areas, often the connecting areas between carriages. You will find the “Smoking” sign at the connection space between two carriages. You will find some Chinese smokers there too.
Currently, smoking is banned on more and more normal-speed trains, for healthy and safety issue. In this case, you can ask the staff on the train is there smoking area and where the smoking place is.

Excuse me, where is smoking area on the train? Thanks.
According to a newly released document in China, smoking violators on high-speed trains or the no-smoking areas on normal-speed trains will be prevented from train travel for 180 days, and will be fined 500-2,000 CNY (71-296 USD).
If the smoking result in a threat to the public security, besides the punishments mentioned above, the violator will also be given up 15-day security detention, or even be subjected to criminal punishments by the police.
On normal-speed trains, each carriage contains both smoking and non-smoking area usually. However there is one air conditioning system only per carriage on the normal-speed train. So the smell of smoke can be spread to non-smoking area too. For passengers allergic to smoke, it is better to take high-speed train for the trip.
