Weather: December is the coldest month after January and February, and the temperatures drop 10 °C from November to freezing. It is often freezing at night. The average nightly low temperature is 2 °C (36 °F), and the average daily high temperature is 11 °C (52 °F). The humidity of 74% makes it feel colder.
It rains or snows about 7 days a month for a total of 26 mm. The rain is gentle or moderate. Thunderstorms don't happen, but it snows about 2 or 3 times in December. Though most days are clear or partly cloudy, the smog makes it seem hazy or overcast.
Pollution: The Air Quality Index is 220 or heavily polluted mainly due to burning coal. If you have asthma or health problems, it is advisable to go in the fall or spring when there is much less pollution. Check the local weather forecast>>
Clothing: Wear a heavy coat to keep warm and dress in layers since there is a large temperature difference between day and night. Also some buildings are heated, and some are not. You might need to wear your coat inside.
East Lake Park: This huge park near central Wuhan is a good place to enjoy. You can explore 88 square kilometers of woods, hills, gardens, and winding paths as well as one of China's best provincial museums.
The Hubei Provincial Museum: This is a good place to visit on cold days in East Lake Park. It is one of China's best museums for foreign tourists. It is a big museum on large grounds on the shore of East Lake. It is Wuhan's most popular foreign tourist highlight.
Enjoy fine dining at the restaurants: When it is cold, snowy and overcast, you can eat local spicy cuisine and shop. In Hankou, the recommended restaurants are Taizi and Old Hankou because they feature the local cuisine.
Shopping: We recommend Wuhan Tiandi (武汉天地) for upscale shopping in Hankou. There is a 3-D theater.
During this low travel season, few tourists visit the city, and you can make reservations easily. The attractions are less crowded. You can find good discounts on hotel rooms and Wuhan flights, and train tickets including bullet trains.

Yangtze River cruise: Winter is a good time for a cruise on this vast river. Prices are about half that of high season, and the scenery in the Three Gorges is actually better because the river is lower. Many cruise ships stop at Wuhan.
