Having lived in Chengdu for over fifty years, I am most satisfied with the local climate. The outdoor temperatures range from a mild 5°C in the winter to a warm 35°C in the summer. This means you can visit Chengdu any time of the year without worrying about extreme temperatures. The air is humid, so I've never needed moisturizing skincare products.
Chengdu has longer springs and autumns, with shorter summers and winters. I feel that spring spans from March to June, summer covers July and August, autumn lasts from September to December, and winter is in January and February.
The best seasons to visit Chengdu are spring and autumn because the weather is neither too hot nor too cold. You can trust my judgment, given my many years here.
- During spring and autumn, daytime temperatures are typically between 12°C and 26°C, and these seasons are when flowers bloom. It's the time when I wear a jacket, adding a sweatshirt in early spring.
- In summer, temperatures range from 28°C to 35°C, so a T-shirt is all I need.
- In winter, with temperatures from 5°C to 12°C, a down jacket is necessary.

Hi, I'm Jason, and I have hosted many foreign tourists, including some important figures such as the King of Gambling from Macau and a prince from the British royal family. I was born in Chengdu and am very familiar with the city's history, culture, and cuisine. Whether it's the adorable pandas, the ancient charm of Kuanzhai Alley, or the spicy and flavorful hot pot, I hope to have the opportunity to guide you in experiencing the charm of this "Land of Abundance".
Different Seasons to See Giant Pandas
If you're coming specifically to see the pandas, let me tell you the best time to visit.
- Spring is the pandas' mating season. During this time, you can see panda cubs born the previous year, around 7-9 months old. These energetic babies are learning to eat bamboo and often playfully interact with their mothers.
- Summer is when panda mothers give birth. Most cubs are born during this season. If you're curious about newborn pandas, you can see tiny, mouse-like babies in incubators.
- Autumn is when pandas are at their plumpest, having been nourished by fresh bamboo shoots in spring and summer. They look their cutest during this time. Newborns from that year are about three months old and can be seen sunbathing on the grass.
- Winter is the pandas' favorite season. The colder it gets, the more active they become, rolling around and climbing trees for extended periods. By this season, the year's cubs are six months old and start crawling around on the grass.

The "Chengdu Giant Panda Breeding Center" in the city is the largest panda conservation and breeding center globally. When I first came here as a trainee guide, I realized how challenging the job was because the base is vast, resembling a sea of bamboo with no straight paths.
The trails between panda enclosures are all winding. In my first year as a guide, I was constantly worried about getting lost.
If you visit the base, I recommend going with a guide. This ensures you make the most of your time with the pandas. Unlike museum exhibits, pandas are adorable yet lazy. If you arrive too early, they might still be asleep. If you arrive too late, they might be napping again.
The best time to see them is during their two-hour breakfast window. An experienced guide can take you to see the pandas right when they wake up and ensure you visit all the active ones before they nap again. This optimal time is around 8:30-10:30 am (except in summer).

Biologists say pandas prefer temperatures below 26°C. Above this, during the summer, they stay indoors with air conditioning. So, summer isn't ideal for visiting the Chengdu base. However, if you plan to visit during the summer holidays, it's still possible. Let me explain how.
About 60 kilometers from Chengdu is Mount Qingcheng, a World Heritage Site and the birthplace of Taoism in China, known for its cool climate. At its base is the second panda base: China Conservation and Research Centre for the Giant Panda.
If you visit Chengdu in summer, I suggest coming here. Even in summer, it's cool and pleasant, and the pandas wake up early, strolling, rolling, and climbing in their enclosures, eagerly waiting for their breakfast at 9 am.
