  • Enjoy off-season discounts and quieter attractions.

Things to Do in Zhangjiajie in December

1. Explore Yellow Dragon Cave

Yellow Dragon Cave in Zhangjiajie

Yellow Dragon Cave (Huanglong Cave) is a perfect spot to escape the winter cold. It's a giant cave that stays at a comfortable, constant temperature all year round.

Developed with colorful lights, the Yellow Dragon Cave showcases amazing rock formations that look like a magical underground world. You can even take a 10-minute boat ride on an underground river to see more of the cave's wonders.

It's important to note that the walk through the cave is about 4 kilometers long and there is no turning back, which can be tiring. The paths and stairs are well-built, but they could get slippery from water drips, so please be sure to walk slowly and watch your step carefully.

After you emerge from the cave, you may notice the golden or red autumn leaves in the plaza near it in early December. On a clear day, relaxing amidst the last vestiges of autumn scenery is a wonderful option.

2. Enjoy the Snow Scenery in Zhangjiajie National Forest Park

Winter transforms the park into a quiet, snowy wonderland.

From mid-to-late December with the temperature drops, you'll have a great chance to see the famous rime ice, frozen waterfalls, and peaks dusted with white snow.

However, December can be foggy, and paths can get slippery.

To make the most of your day, we highly recommend using the park's shuttle buses and cable cars as much as possible. This is the safest and easiest way to see the stunning views, especially for seniors.

If you do plan to hike along the trails, please be extra careful on icy paths. We suggest visiting around late December, when it usually offers clearer days and sunnier weather, and wearing sturdy, warm shoes with good grip to prevent slips and falls.

3. Take the Cableway to View the Rime Ice at Tianmen Mountain

For your best chance to see stunning rime ice—those frosty, white crystals covering the trees—head to Tianmen Mountain.

It is higher than the Zhangjiajie National Forest Park, giving you a greater chance to see dramatic winter scenery.

The ride up in the world's longest single-line cableway is an experience in itself. You'll watch as Tianmen Mountain slowly appears from the mist, creating a magical, floating-in-the-clouds feeling.

Please note that the cableway and glass walkway may close during heavy snow or severe ice.

We recommend checking the weather forecast and having a flexible plan. When you travel with us(China Highlights), your local guide will handle these details for you, ensuring a smooth and worry-free trip even in winter weather.

4. Soak in a Natural Hot Spring

Just around an hour's drive from Zhangjiajie City, the Wanfu Hot Spring Resort offers a perfect winter escape.

The natural spring water is crystal clear and flows out at a soothing 54°C (129°F) year-round. Nestled within a peaceful forest, you can relax in a semi-open-air pool.

It's the ideal way to warm up and rejuvenate after a day of hiking in the chilly air. For an extra refresh, you can use the sauna before your soak to help your circulation.

Afterward, don't forget to try a local specialty: the steaming hot Tujia Sanxia Guo (Three-Pot Stew/土家三下锅). This hearty dish of cured pork, tofu, and radish is the perfect way to warm your body from the inside out.

What to Pack and Wear in Zhangjiajie in December

December in Zhangjiajie is cold, with mountain areas like the National Forest Park being 3-5°C (5-9°F) colder than the city.

It is essential to pack a down jacket or a thick coat as your outer layer. Wear thermal underwear and a sweater underneath for adaptable warmth. The mountain tops are windy, so a fleece hat, scarf, and gloves are must-haves to protect against the cold.

Warm, non-slip hiking boots are a must-have. For walking on icy paths, you can rent crampons (anti-slip grips) within the scenic area, but remember to remove these before setting foot on the glass walkway.

Keep in mind that you should always walk slowly and watch your step on icy paths. It's easy to slip if you're distracted while taking photos.
