How to avoid the crowds:

Zhangjiajie National Forest Park now implements a daily visitor cap of 53,000. While this helps manage congestion, popular viewpoints can still be crowded.

• Strategic Timing: To improve your experience, visit the main attractions on weekdays and arrive by 8:00 AM to avoid the peak tour group swarm after 9:00 AM.
• Explore Alternatives: Seek out less-crowded gems like Sky Farmland and Yaozi Village for a more serene experience.
• Hold VIP Access: It's important to know that only VIP tickets for the Bailong Elevator can be booked in advance to skip queues. For the park's shuttle buses and the Tianmen Mountain cable car, VIP tickets (if available) are sold on-site and stop once daily capacity is reached.

1. Hike Along the Shaded Golden Whip Stream

You can expect more people in the afternoon at Golden Whip Stream.

This 7.5-kilometer trail winds through towering peaks and lush valleys, where you can spot wild monkeys along the way. The highlight is Purple Grass Pool, where you can wade into the mysteriously purple-tinted water to cool off. 

The entire hike takes about 2 hours at a leisurely pace. Keep your bags secured and avoid feeding the monkeys directly. Because of the summer rush, we suggest leaving this visit for your last day and starting your hike early in the morning to beat both crowds and heat.

2. Take a Cloud-Level Cable Car to Peak Tianmen Mountain

Escape the summer heat by ascending 1,500 meters to Tianmen Mountain, where temperatures drop about 5°C and mountain breezes provide natural air conditioning. 

To avoid the peak-season crowds, aim to catch the first cable car of the day for the most peaceful experience. 

Alternatively, braving the midday heat can also be less crowded, as many morning visitors begin to descend. If you're lucky, you might even catch a light show at Tianmen Mountain around 7:30 PM.

Bring a light jacket with you for the temperature difference, and note that glass walkways may temporarily close during heavy rain or strong winds.

3. Escape the Heat at Yellow Dragon Cave

Most would recommend taking the Bailong Elevator directly to the viewing platform, but lining up in July can easily last for hours due to the large crowds at the site.
