How many days should you spend in Xi'an?
In most cases, 3–4 days is ideal. This allows you to see the main attractions while also giving you time to enjoy the city's cultural side.
With only 2 days, the schedule becomes tighter, but you can still cover the essentials.
Spending 5–7 days allows you to go beyond the city and explore more of the surrounding landscapes and historical sites.

Xi'an Itinerary for 3-4 Days: Essence of Xi'an
If it's your first visit, we recommend spending about 3 days in Xi'an. This is enough to see the city's most iconic landmarks while also experiencing its culture and local life at a comfortable pace.
If you have 4 days, you'll have more flexibility to slow down or add a deeper experience, such as a mountain trip or more cultural activities.
For 3 Days:
Here's a suggested 3-day itinerary for Xi'an:
- Day 1: Arrival in Xi'an (optional visit to the Hanyangling Mausoleum)
- Day 2: Visit the Terracotta Army, walk or cycle on the City Wall, and explore the Muslim Quarter
- Day 3: Try Hanfu experience, visit the Small Wild Goose Pagoda and Xi'an Museum, then depart
On Day 1, if you arrive by flight before noon and want to make the most of your time, we recommend visiting Hanyangling Mausoleum on the way to the city. It's located about 20 minutes from the airport and does not require a detour.
This lesser-known site is much quieter than the Terracotta Army and features an underground museum, making it a good introduction to Xi'an's imperial history before seeing larger sites.
If you arrive later, it's better to rest and save your energy for the next day.

After the visit and lunch, if you're interested in a more interactive experience, we can arrange access to a conservation lab nearby. You could try restoring a miniature warrior and even touch real Qin Dynasty relic fragments. It's a behind-the-scenes way to better understand how these artifacts are preserved.

By evening, you could enjoy Xi'an's vibrant nightlife. You might watch a live performance, such as The Empress of the Great Tang, or explore the night views around the Bell Tower and Grand Tang Ever Night City.
On Day 3, the pace slows down before departure, giving you time to further explore the city's history and its role along the Silk Road.
For something more engaging, a Hanfu experience adds a fun cultural touch to your final day.

For 4 Days:
If you have 4 days, consider adding a day trip to Mount Hua. Our 4-Day Xi'an and Mount Hua Mountain Tour includes cable car rides, making it easy to enjoy the mountain's dramatic cliffs and panoramic views.
Mount HuaBesides Mount Hua, there are other ways to use your extra day:
- Try a traditional Chinese medicine experience: Add half a day for an exclusive experience arranged by us. You could have a pulse diagnosis, learn how herbal medicine is prepared, enjoy a short massage, and taste herbal cuisine. It's a unique way to explore China's health traditions in a more immersive way.
- Explore Xi'an's food scene: Add half a day for Yongxingfang. Unlike the Muslim Quarter, which mainly features halal food such as beef and mutton, Yongxingfang brings together local specialties from all over Shaanxi Province. You could also watch intangible cultural heritage performances.
- Join traditional cultural activities: Add half a day for calligraphy, paper cutting, or shadow puppetry.
- Go shopping: Spend half a day at SKP, Joy City, MixC, SEG Plaza, or Shuyuanmen Cultural Street.
Is 2 Days in Xi'an Enough?
Yes, 2 days are enough to explore Xi'an's main highlights, including the Terracotta Army and key sites in the city. However, compared with a 3–4 day trip, the pace will be tighter, and you'll have less time for in-depth cultural experiences.
Here's a suggested 2-day Xi'an itinerary:
- Day 1: Arrival in Xi'an, visit the Terracotta Army (optional visit to Huaqing Palace)
- Day 2: Visit the Small Wild Goose Pagoda and Xi'an Museum, walk or cycle on the City Wall, explore the Muslim Quarter, then depart.
To make this plan work smoothly, you should arrive in Xi'an before noon on the first day. This ensures you have enough time in the afternoon to visit the Terracotta Army, which typically requires 3 hours and is the most important site in Xi'an.
If you arrive later, it's better to switch the plan. You could explore the City Wall and the Muslim Quarter on the first afternoon, and visit the Terracotta Army the next day instead.
If you only have one full day in Xi'an (arriving the night before), we recommend focusing on the Terracotta Army, the City Wall, and the Muslim Quarter. These are the city's most iconic highlights and give you a well-rounded introduction within limited time. See our One-Day Xi'an Highlights Private Tour.
Xi'an Itinerary for 5-7 Days: Richer Experiences In and Around Xi'an
If you have 5–7 days in Xi'an, you could extend your trip beyond the city for a wider range of landscapes and cultural experiences.
There are two main directions to consider, depending on your interests.
Stay Within Shaanxi Province for Natural Landscapes
If you prefer natural scenery, we recommend staying within Shaanxi Province. Travel distances are more manageable, and it's easier to combine multiple sites into one continuous route.
You could spend one day visiting Hukou Waterfall if you're interested in powerful natural landscapes.
For those interested in unique landforms and photography, spending one day at Jingbian Wave Valley, or taking a two-day trip to Ganquan Grand Canyon are good options.
Ganquan Grand CanyonIf your time allows, we recommend combining these destinations into a multi-day trip. This way, you won't need to rush between sites and can better enjoy both the scenery and the journey. Consider our 7-Day Xi'an, Wave Valley & Hukou Waterfall Tour as a well-planned option.
Visit Nearby Cities Outside Shaanxi for History and Culture
If you're particularly interested in history and culture, consider using your extra days to visit nearby cities easily accessible from Xi'an within a week.
Luoyang, Pingyao and Datong are among the most popular choices, each offering unique experiences beyond Xi'an.
Spending 1–2 days in Luoyang if you enjoy Buddhist art and Shaolin culture, where you'll find refined grotto carvings and long-standing temple heritage that complement Xi'an's imperial history. See our 6-Day Xi'an, Luoyang & Shaolin Highlights Tour.
Longmen Grottoes in LuoyangPingyao is an excellent choice if you're drawn to traditional architecture and a more atmospheric setting. You could spend 1–2 days here. The ancient city is well preserved and gives you a clearer sense of historical urban life in China. See our 8-Day Beijing–Pingyao–Xi'an Private Tour.
If you're interested in large-scale Buddhist carvings and unique architectural sites, Datong is worth a 2-day visit. Here, you'll find monumental cave sculptures and dramatic cliffside structures, offering a more visually striking experience compared to other destinations.
