Xi'an Itinerary for 3-4 Days: Essence of Xi'an
If it's your first visit, we recommend spending about 3 days in Xi'an. This is enough to see the city's most iconic landmarks while also experiencing its culture and local life at a comfortable pace.
If you have 4 days, you'll have more flexibility to slow down or add a deeper experience, such as a mountain trip or more cultural activities.
For 3 Days:
Here's a suggested 3-day itinerary for Xi'an:
- Day 1: Arrival in Xi'an (optional visit to the Hanyangling Mausoleum)
- Day 2: Visit the Terracotta Army, walk or cycle on the City Wall, and explore the Muslim Quarter
- Day 3: Try Hanfu experience, visit the Small Wild Goose Pagoda and Xi'an Museum, then depart
On Day 1, if you arrive by flight before noon and want to make the most of your time, we recommend visiting Hanyangling Mausoleum on the way to the city. It's located about 20 minutes from the airport and does not require a detour.
This lesser-known site is much quieter than the Terracotta Army and features an underground museum, making it a good introduction to Xi'an's imperial history before seeing larger sites.
If you arrive later, it's better to rest and save your energy for the next day.
Burial pits in Hanyang MausoleumDay 2 is the highlight of your trip, focusing on Xi'an's must-see sights. In the morning, you'll visit the Terracotta Army, located about an hour from the city center.

Is 2 Days in Xi'an Enough?
Yes, 2 days are enough to explore Xi'an's main highlights, including the Terracotta Army and key sites in the city. However, compared with a 3–4 day trip, the pace will be tighter, and you'll have less time for in-depth cultural experiences.
Here's a suggested 2-day Xi'an itinerary:
- Day 1: Arrival in Xi'an, visit the Terracotta Army (optional visit to Huaqing Palace)
- Day 2: Visit the Small Wild Goose Pagoda and Xi'an Museum, walk or cycle on the City Wall, explore the Muslim Quarter, then depart.
To make this plan work smoothly, you should arrive in Xi'an before noon on the first day. This ensures you have enough time in the afternoon to visit the Terracotta Army, which typically requires 3 hours and is the most important site in Xi'an.
If you arrive later, it's better to switch the plan. You could explore the City Wall and the Muslim Quarter on the first afternoon, and visit the Terracotta Army the next day instead.

If you have 5–7 days in Xi'an, you could extend your trip beyond the city for a wider range of landscapes and cultural experiences.
There are two main directions to consider, depending on your interests.
Stay Within Shaanxi Province for Natural Landscapes
If you prefer natural scenery, we recommend staying within Shaanxi Province. Travel distances are more manageable, and it's easier to combine multiple sites into one continuous route.
You could spend one day visiting Hukou Waterfall if you're interested in powerful natural landscapes.
