Wulingyuan is a town close to the National Forest Park. Once you arrive in Zhangjiajie, Wulingyuan is just 30-40 minutes removed by bus, taxi, or private transfer.
Because Zhangjiajie is relatively small, it is quite easy to get around. With only 36 kilometers (22 miles) between the city of Zhangjiajie and Wulingyuan Scenic Area, or Wulingyuan town where there are convenient hotels, your options for getting to the beautiful mountains you see in the pictures in this article are detailed below.
Central to this Zhangjiajie attractions map and most Zhangjiajie tours is the journey from Zhangjiajie city center to Wulingyuan town, gateway to Zhangjiajie National Forest Park.
The bus between Zhangjiajie and Wulingyuan leaves from Zhangjiajie Central Bus Station, which is just by Zhangjiajie Railway Station.
Buses from here depart frequently; approximately every 5 minutes every day of the week, and the journey takes about 40 minutes for just 12 RMB between 8 am and 8 pm. This is the recommended route if you are looking to save money and to travel between those times. Please be advised: The bus mainly caters for Chinese backpackers with no English spoken. It is maybe very noisy.
Alternatively, you can get a taxi between the two from anywhere in the city. Just show them the Chinese for Wulingyuan Scenic Area: 武陵源景区, or the Chinese name for the specific spot you're trying to get to at the scenic area (for example if you're staying at a hotel nearby).
Taxis will go a little faster than buses, and take just over 30 minutes. Expect to pay between 80 and 150 RMB, depending on your negotiation skills and time of day. At night, when there are no more buses, you'll be looking at closer to 150 RMB.
We can arrange a private transfer to Wulingyuan from Zhangjiajie for you. You can get prices by contacting us here, as your quote will depend on how many people you are traveling with and how many suitcases you're carrying. This is by far the most convenient option as you'll be picked up wherever you are, and we will ensure your driver knows where in Wulingyuan you'd like to go ahead of time.
The best time to go to Zhangjiajie is when there are no public holidays in China, as it gets really busy, and when Zhangjiajie's weather is best. Between September and early November, the weather is comfortable. You can also go between April and June if you don't mind humidity and the occasional rain.
Chinese public holidays will lead to more expensive accommodation and flights (and sold out flights), these times are:
