Things to Do in Kunming in June

Enjoy Dragon Boat Festival

Dragon Boat Festival (the 5th day of the 5th month in the Chinese lunar calendar) usually takes place during June. There are dragon boat competitions and other celebrations that vary based on different ethnic groups. You may get a chance to enjoy the spectacular festival sights if you visit Kunming during this month.

Recreate at Western Hills

Western Hills, west of Kunming city, offers something for every age. For older adults and kids, there is a scenic tramway and buses to ride. And for people who are fit, there are high stairways and long walking paths. For everyone, when the weather is dry, it is an opportunity to be among thousands of Chinese recreating and learn about modern Chinese culture.

This place is very popular among Chinese who appreciate the extensive park near Kunming where they can exercise and see the scenery high above Kunming. Many Chinese also visit the old temples and the overlook of Lake Dianchi. The mountain peak is 2,350 meters high (7,700 feet), and on the mountain, a number of old temples can be visited including the Longman Grottoes, Huating Temple, and Taihua Temple.

The park area is only 15 kilometers from Kunming, so visitors can reach it quickly. You can get up via a combination of climbing up on foot, taking the scenic tram, or riding a bus to various locations. How you choose to get up depends and what you want enjoy. We suggest taking the tram up to avoid the stair climbing and then hiking around on the top to the various sites and scenic overlooks. That is exercise enough for most people considering the high elevation since the paths extend for many kilometers. Then enjoy the cart ride downhill.

Explore Stone Forest Park

Stone ForestStone Forest

Another place to hike when the weather is good is Stone Forest Park. It is a listed UNESCO geopark known for its unusual karst geology. But it is not a good place to hike in when it is raining because the footing is treacherous. It is one of Kunming's best highlights.

The geopark has amazing geological features including several square miles of stone pillars, ravines, pits, and caves. Some areas of the park look like a conifer forest. Lion Pavilion (Shizi Ting) is the highest point in the park, and it is a good place to see the area. Be careful as you hike around. Wear good shoes with good traction because a slip might be dangerous. It is about a 1.5 hour drive from Kunming.

Yunnan Provincial Museum

When it is raining, you can step into Yunnan Provincial Museum where there are artifacts from the prehistoric times until modern times. You can spend a few hours learning about the history of Yunnan and China. There is a section for the Dian Kingdom that existed in the area, and you can see stone age artifacts. There is a small section about ethnic minorities. The building is an old Soviet-style building, and the insides have been modernized.
