Weather: January is the coolest month in Macau, but most people will find the weather still quite comfortable. It is cool during the daytime with the average daily high temperature at 18 °C (64 °F), and the average low temperature is around 12 °C (54 °F).
January is the driest month of the year. Macau gets about 32 mm of rain in January, and it rains about 6 days each January. This makes the weather comfortable for people to walk between attractions and casinos.
Clothing: Generally a light jacket or sweater will be enough to keep you warm outside.
Things to Do
January has fine weather for a visit, but if the Chinese New Year falls during the time you are there, it might be too crowded, noisy and expensive for you. It is an optimal time to experience authentic Chinese culture though, and you can go out and see the fireworks and celebrations.
Celebrate Chinese New Year: This is the most important Chinese holiday, and the Spring Festival public holidays covers a two week vacation for many Mainlanders and a three or four day vacation for Hong Kongers. Chinese New Year usually falls in early or mid February, though for a third of years it's in late January. For tourists, the holidays provide a chance to have fun with fireworks, try holiday food, buy tourist souvenirs and experience a local custom firsthand in the historic city. See our Chinese New Year Travel Tips.
See the Chinese New Year Fireworks at the Macau Tower: On Chinese New Year's Eve, the government of Macau sponsors a big fireworks display along the shore next to the tower. You could also go up and see the sights of the city from the observation deck. It is one of the top 20 or so tall towers in the world.
The Chinese New Year's parade at Senado Square: Though the biggest casinos have their own lion dances and celebrations, this is the biggest Chinese New Year's parade in Macau. There are many "lions" (costumed performers) dancing along with a big dragon and floats. Senado Square is noted for its beauty and historic Portuguese buildings, and its all lit up for the celebrations.
January includes peak travel times. The Chinese Spring Festival season and the Western New Year holidays are part of what makes January a peak tourist month. Mainland Chinese flock in, and a lot of tourists crowd the attractions. Hotel rooms, flights, and train tickets for the Macau region are in high demand. Hotels may increase their prices sharply and rooms may even be unavailable, so plan ahead if you are traveling during January.
