Guangzhou Weather in May - The Beginning of the Hot Summer

May ushers in early summer in Guangzhou. Temperatures climb noticeably, with daytime highs reaching 28-33°C (82-91°F), and humidity hovering around 80%. The rainy season continues strong, expecting 12-18 rainy days throughout the month. The afternoon thunderstorms are becoming more frequent and intense.

Is May a Good Time to Visit Guangzhou?

Aside from the first week of May (May Day Holiday), May is generally still a relatively good time to visit Guangzhou.

  • Temperature: While daytime can be warm, Guangzhou offers many indoor experiences worth exploring, such as visiting a smart electric vehicle factory, large wholesale clothing markets, or enjoying a morning tea in a local teahouse.
  • Rainfall: Although May sees frequent rainfall, it mostly occurs in the afternoons and evenings and is relatively short-lived, lasting 1-2 hours, so it has little impact on your itinerary.
  • Seasonal Produce: Additionally, May is the season for fresh local fruits like plums, lychees, and pineapples to hit the market - you can enjoy the freshest seasonal produce.

What Is It Like to Visit Guangzhou during the May Day Holiday?

May Day Holiday in ChimelongMay Day Holiday in Chimelong

May 1st to 5th is a Chinese public holiday. During this time, Guangzhou gets very busy because of its convenient high-speed rail access, diverse cuisine, rich theme park experiences, and stunning night views.

You may face disadvantages such as hotel price hikes (50-100%), traffic congestion, and long queues at attractions.

If your vacation falls during this period, the following two tips may help you:

  • Book your hotel at least 2 months in advance to secure your preferred accommodation. If you plan to visit Chimelong Resort, it's best to stay at the resort's hotel. This saves travel time, allows for early park entry, and avoids the peak crowds.
  • Opt for a private tour where a local guide can help you navigate around congested routes and avoid big crowds.

Some Activities I Recommend You Try in May in Guangzhou

If you visit Guangzhou in May, aside from must-see spots like the Chen Clan Ancestral Hall, I'd recommend focusing more on cooler destinations and unique indoor explorations, such as an electric vehicle factory tour.

1. Cool Off at Gulong Gorge and Enjoy Thrilling Activities

Gulong Gorge comes to my first recommendation because of its extremely natural scenery and thrilling fun activities. We personally visited this location last September for an on-site inspection. The canyon's dense forest canopy, rushing waterfalls, and elevation create temperatures 5-8°C cooler than Guangzhou.

Gulong Gorge is about 1.5 hours from downtown Guangzhou. I recommend setting aside most of the day for this place. The visit of the scenic area is mainly divided into three parts:

  • The hike from the foot of the mountain to the summit: This takes about 30 minutes. The slope of stone steps is gentle enough for both the elderly and children to manage. Along the way, you can view several small waterfalls. If you want to save energy, you can take the lift midway, cutting about 10 minutes off the walking time.
  • At the summit: You can enjoy the great waterfall view from the glass viewing platform. This area features a U-shaped glass platform, a glass walkway, and a suspended sky ladder (rainbow bridge).
  • From the summit to the exit: You can take the Cliff Racer for about 15 minutes ride to reach the scenic area exit. The cliff racer have strict age restrictions (ages 12-60). If you are not within the age range, you'll need to walk down the mountain, which takes about 30 minutes.
Qingyuan Gulong Gorge – Cliff racerMy colleague is currently riding the Cliff Racer.

You may also heard about the QQ Racing Car. It's more like driving on a road and less thrilling than the Cliff Racer. To ride it, you'll need to climb for about 10 minutes from the foot of the mountain. I'd recommend just choosing the Cliff Racer instead.

The gorge is extensive with multiple activity zones. If you prefer to skip the logistics, we offer tours that include Gulong Gorge with all arrangements handled. Get some inspiration from our 4-Day Guangzhou, Qingyuan, and Gulongxia itinerary.

2. Visit an Electric Vehicle Factory to Learn About China's Intelligent Manufacturing

Want to know why China is the world's largest producer and exporter of new energy vehicles? I recommend visiting Guangzhou's largest smart electric vehicle factory: the XPeng Motors Factory.

The factory is about a 1.5-hour drive from the city center. Inside, you'll witness firsthand how various automotive components are assembled into a complete car in a highly automated setting (a truly impressive sight). This is a snapshot of China's rapid high-tech development. The tour lasts approximately 2 hours.

XPeng Motors Factory is one of the few new energy vehicle factories that accepts groups of fewer than 10 visitors. We currently have a partnership with the factory, so you will get chance to visit this factory by joining our Guangzhou industry tour.

Note: The car factory tour can only be arranged on weekdays (during production hours), so visits are not available on weekends or major public holidays. Additionally, children under 6 years old are not permitted to join.

3. Explore Old Guangzhou (Xiguan) and Taste Authentic Food

Xiguan is a place I always visit whenever I'm in Guangzhou. Not only can you taste the most authentic local cuisine here, but you can also witness the traditional way of life of old Guangzhou (elders gather for tea and conversation or play chess).

To taste the most authentic Guangzhou cuisine, you definitely can't miss this neighborhood. Start your trip from Enning Road, then ending in Yongqing Fang. This roughly 600-meter-long community street is packed with authentic Guangzhou food stalls and restaurants.

The neighborhood's traditional arcade architecture (qilou) provides covered walkways, letting you explore even during rainy days in May. You'll move from teahouse to noodle shop, dessert stall to dim sum restaurant, experiencing authentic Cantonese flavors in their birthplace.

Among my favorite foods in Xiguan, I highly recommend you try the Bamboo tube rice noodle at Xiguan Bamboo Garden Restaurant. The flavor is exceptionally fresh and savory. This restaurant has been listed in the Michelin Guide for several consecutive years.

4. Learn Wing Chun Kung Fu from an Admirer of Bruce Lee

Wing Chun Kung FuWing Chun Kung Fu training

Guangzhou is the hometown of Kung Fu and was also the former residence of Bruce Lee. When you come to Guangzhou, it is a good chance to experience the charm of Chinese martial arts.

Instead of just watching a Kung Fu exhibition, I highly recommend that you and your family take an authentic Kung Fu class to experience the essence of Chinese martial arts firsthand.

The martial arts school where you can learn Wing Chun is located near Bruce Lee's former residence. This isn't a place specially designed for tourists. It's a martial arts school where locals learn Kung Fu.

With arrangements made by our local guides, you will learn alongside a Wing Chun master with years of martial arts experience. The experience lasts about two hours.

What you can expect:

  • Basic stance and footwork training
  • Chain punch technique (Wing Chun's signature rapid strikes)
  • Wooden dummy practice
  • Cultural context about the martial art's Guangzhou roots

Kung Fu class schedules need to be booked at least one week in advance. If you'd like to experience it, please contact us to make arrangements.

5. Explore the Kaiping Diaolou: The Only UNESCO Site Near Guangzhou

Kaiping DiaolouKaiping Diaolou in Zili Village
Kaiping DiaolouKaiping Diaolou, Zili Village

As the only UNESCO World Heritage Site in Guangzhou, the Kaiping Diaolou (watchtowers) not only embody the stories of Chinese overseas emigrants but also witness the Chinese thoughts of returning roots. The watchtowers, surrounded by rice fields, bamboo groves, and villages, create a unique rural landscape, especially photogenic. I recommend spending about two hours exploring this unique destination.

The Kaiping Diaolou are located about 1.5 hours by car from downtown Guangzhou. Scattered across multiple villages in Kaiping City, there are over 1,800 towers in total. The best-preserved and most visually impressive clusters are found in Zili Village and Liyuan Garden. Two places are only about a 10-minute drive apart. I suggest visiting both.

To gain a deeper understanding of the diaolou's history, I recommend exploring with our local guide. Our guide will take you inside the towers and share how overseas Chinese brought foreign elements back to their homeland to build these unique structures.

After exploring the diaolou, you can enjoy authentic local cuisine at a village restaurant or take a short 10-minute drive to Chikan Ancient Town, where you can wander through its historical arcade-style streets and old town.

What to Wear in Guangzhou in May

May's heat and humidity require a strategic wardrobe. The key is choosing fabrics that breathe, dry quickly, and don't cling when you sweat, because you will sweat.

Daily essentials:

  • Ultra-breathable fabrics: Quick-dry synthetics or lightweight cotton (linen gets soggy and heavy)
  • Loose-fitting clothes: Tight clothing becomes uncomfortable in humidity
  • Light colors: Dark colors absorb heat and show sweat stains
  • Rain gear: Compact umbrella and packable rain jacket remain essential
  • Footwear: Sandals or mesh sneakers that drain water and dry fast
