A unique travel destination is waiting for you in Chengdu where you'll find sites such as the Jiuzhaigou Baoen Temple. With almost 600 years of history, the Buddhist temple is an exceptional place to visit.

When to Visit

With its location in south western China, the area features a subtropical monsoon climate that is often affected by the Sichuan Basin. Chengdu's weather is humid and mild year round. The locale has four obvious seasons. Spring is long and warm while summer is brief and muggy. When autumn arrives, the temperatures are cool and wet. Winter is foggy and cold.

The best time for you to visit the Jiuzhaigou Baoen Temple is from March through June or September to November. Be sure to bring a variety of clothing items including rain gear and warm weather attire.

You have several transportation options when journeying to the temple as you can rent a car or take the train. When you choose the train, you'll be stopping at Jiangyou where you'll be transferring to a coach, which will take you to Jiuzhaigou. The entire trip is about 300 kilometers. Other attractions in the area include Mt. Duchui and the Memorial Hall of Li Bai.

In addition to viewing the temple, you'll be driving through picturesque scenery. The area's sights include ancient Tibetan villages, snow peaked mountains and grasslands. While in the area, you may consider spending a few days in the Jiuzhaigou National Park, which is a world renowned nature preserve. In fact, the locale's nickname is the Fairy Land. When you travel in the fall, you'll be arriving as the season begins to express itself in colorful ways.

Once you arrive to the temple, the remarkably detailed structure will amaze you since it features several temple halls brimming with historical artwork. For example, you'll see carvings of flying dragons on the walls along with an exhibit of Bodhisattvas, which are human-sized statues that are a main temple hall display. Be sure to find the statue of Guanyin and her 1000 hands. The temple's construction occurred during the Ming Dynasty, and the entire structure is made of sandalwood.

The structure's raised carvings cover the temple walls and present diagram styled depictions of mythological gods and symbols. You may even notice unique figures such as the monkey god. The temple's location is desolate, and the religious building was once called "the hidden city." You'll find the temple be a tremendous sightseeing experience.
